Maybe one of you network gurus can help me figure out my problem here... but first you'll need some history:

bought the DIR-655 and ran "N" from my two "Intel 4695AGN" laptops via "WPA & WPA2" with "TKIP & AES" with no issues for over a year. Then not long ago my router started resetting it's wifi over and over again causing all my wifi clients to drop and then reconnect. I "think" this is related to my neighbor setting up a new "N" network.

At first I thought it was hardware so I got another DIR-655... same deal... now I'm trying a DGL-4500. I tried "N" only with 2.4Ghz and then 5Ghz, but the problems remain.

Having been going crazy for the last 5 hours I "think" I've tracked the route of the problem down to the AES cypher. Any time I enable either "TKIP & AES" or just "AES" my router will start it's "wifi restart" cycle, but as long as I keep AES turned off and only use TKIP my wifi becomes rock solid.

Now my new problem... I can NOT get my laptops to connect to my DGL-4500 using "N" and WPA w/TKIP as they keep defaulting to "G" mode. When I place the router into "N" only mode with said settings, then Windows says "the wifi card doesn't support the AP settings" or something.

Any ideas here?? I can't use AES because then my wifi is super unstable... and I really can't be "unsecured" either. I'd really like to use the "N" my laptops are able to use as if they're going to be stuck in "G" mode I may as well just buy a "G" router and igore the "N" spec.

    thoughts???

    Thanks in advance!

Put your router in N mode only with TKIP, and then go into windows and scan for it. When it comes up, right-click on your network, and go to properties. From there, select the appropriate security type and encryption, then put in your key. I believe the issue lies in the fact that windows keeps over security settings once it is associated with a network. So if the same network is present with new settings, it won't connect.

    thanks for the reply...

I tried going into "N" only mode with only WPA and TKIP enabled in the router, I then changed my ID to something different so windows would think it was a new network.

After manually setting "WPA with TKIP" for the laptop it connected to the router with the "G" protocol again.

It seems the laptop refuses to connect using "N" unless AES is being used and it doesn't seem to matter if I'm using WPA or WPA2.

Is this a limit in my wireless card?... or the "N" Spec??

Well... I bought a "Belkin N+ (F5D8235-4)" router as a test and it's working fine vs my attempts at two DIR-655s and one DGL-4500. The biggest downside is the GUI... it sucks, but since the router and WiFi is working as it should I guess I can't complain too much.

I'd still prefer to use my DIR-655 since I can manually set more things in the GUI so if anyone can solve my problem I'm all ears.

glad to hear you found a solution. I would recommend you check for the latest firmware for the DIR-6555, since you can connect with the Belkin router.
