My laptop has an Intel 3945 chipset
I get low speeds and low connectivity even when I'm just 2 rooms away.
Is is advisable to buy an exteral wi-fi card(USB or the port)

If it is, advise me the best, which offers best range and best speed

the card is likely fine. Try checking the card's settings in the Device Manager for power management and signal strength. Set the signal to max and see what happens.

Also if you are not using a network as, well, a network and are just accessing the web and maybe sharing a printer or a few files...even if you connect to the router at 3-6Mbps you are FINE as you are so far above the actual data throughput it does not matter one tiny bit how fast yout connection to your router is...even if you had a T1 line.

btw, it's not the number of rooms away that matter as much as where your router is and what the walls are made of and have in them. Denser walls or those with lots of metal stuff in them almost exponentially decrease range.

Sometimes moving your router higher on the wall or to a higher shelf helps...or to the other side of the room...adjusting the antenna position can help too....just fiddle until it works better.

right, it will likely not improve things speedwise. You might get a faster connection but you will not see any difference in how fast data moves to you. I have doubts that it will even improve the connect rate at all.

You can try being in the same room with the router to see if the connect speed is improved. It should be but if you run a speed test on the internet connection you will see the approximately the same speed in either place.

You ISP should have a speedtest you can use. If not there tons of them around the web. Find one geographically close to your current location to get the best idea of your speed.
