    Hey!!
I'm planning to buy the WUSB54GC by Linksys because currently the intel 3945 chipset cant catch the wi-fi signal and the router is just in the adjoining appartment.
I the floor where I live there is 1 router and 3 boosters and in my room whenever I close the doors I dont get any signal.
So thats why I'm thinking to buy the Linksys USB wi-fi thingy. Will it really be a benefit to me?? It costs about $60.

It might help, but it is awkward that the 3945 isn't picking up anything at all.

    Double check your settings.

It does work sometimes, like when our apartment door is open and the one with the router is open, if both are closed, no signal.

    What settings do I check??
I dont know how to deal with wi-fi.

Well if the Intel 3945 ABG isn't picking up a signal how do you know the USB receiver will?

Depends on the situation, and eveyr situation is different. The rangemax dongle will boost a weak signal, but if it doesn't see any signal itself it will not work. I used the dongle and boosted my range on my old rig. I was unable to get a signal at my workshop untill I bought one. Now, since I bought a rangemax router and got this new computer, I don't need the dongle. Sorry though, I sold the dongle with my old computer.

I guess then the only way would be to buy it and try it, we cant tell you if it will work better than the Intel 3945 ABG.

It might since its external, it might get a better signal.

depending on your router... there maybe a setting where you can increase the power going into your antenna, effectively improving your broadcast range/signal quality. It was possible on my 2wire, as well as my linksys (w/ 3rd party firmware). You might want to try that first.

From my experiance, I can tell you that Intel's 3945 outperforms all other internal/USB wireless adapters, both for range and wall penetration.

Check that you have the latest drivers (this is important) and that the antennas are connected to the adapter.

Adapters with external standalone antennas or range extenders may have in some cases better link.

The quality of the wireless router is also important...

Typically, in your router's control panel, check the wireless tab, and click on advance settings. Generally, look for some kind of power setting for your antenna, and increase the value.

Note: increasing the power to your antenna my cause your router to be warmer than usual, or possibbly overheat. It is considered pretty safe in moderation.

most likely, there is a hardware reset button some where on your router. (Generally next to you Ethernet ports). Hold that button down for ~10 seconds, and your router should reset to the most recent firmware on your router.

Username and passwords should now be factory default.

    Can you suggest something else?
Or maybe a way of increasing my speed??
Its a 2mbps connection which is shared by heavy downloaders (one of them is me) and the maximum speed I get is about 40 kbps.

Really, the only effective way to make busy networks more efficient is to enable, Quality of Service (QoS) but it is generally handled by the router.

your pretty much out of luck if you cant access the router configuration. See if you apartment/dorm has a wired connection that you can hook upto.

Make sure your ABG3945 card has the TX Power set to the highest level. The default is the lowest. Also double check what router channel you are using and configure your 3945 accordingly.
