Very new to this wireless stuff. Here is my problem. I received a new laptop for Christmas. When I use the ethernet cable to hook up to the router, it is as fast as my desk top, if not faster. When I go wireless, it is so slow, most pages will time out before they can be opened! It does not matter whether I am three feet from the router or twenty. It is the same result.

For example it will open my yahoo mail screen but it is so slow that it will not open the individual mail that has been sent. Something is very wrong, but I do not know what to do to fix it. At this point, my lap top is usless!

I went to one of those sites to test the speed and I can not remember the first number it said but the second number which I assume is the receiving part was only 1 Kb. YES K not M.

I hope I have explained this enough for someone to understand. As you can tell I do not even know enough to try to tell somebody what is wrong!

You could try restoring the router to factory settings by doing a hard reset, that is if you have already done a basic reset. That speed seems unusually low for interference, but keep in mind if there are other devices in you house that operate at 2.4ghz frequency they can interfere, but i doubt that much.

What type of security are you using? WPA(2) Personal AES? if wep change it. Also check to make sure your wireless card is allowed by you fw. If Symantic I would uninstall it and get something else like Comodo FW and Avira AV, both free. You will also need to download the uninstaller from Symantic. They do not know what un-install is and leaves all the files behind. Try changing your MTU to 1492.

I would run cablenet optimizer while on wireless. You will need the aux pack for more setups. If speakeasy speed test or all the second number is usually uplink speed.

Also if on batteries check your energy management CP and advanced port settings. Def on most is to shut them down or drop the power way off. Set these to Always on and max power.
