    Hi all!

I'm planning to get a Compaq V2000 and have the option of choosing between and Intel 2200BG wireless card or the Broadcom 54g. Any ideas is one is better over the other?

I actually had a chance to try a Compoaq V2000 with Intel 2200BG earlier, and I found that the wireless access slows down when on battery. I was able to resolve this issue by turing the wireless card power management to "Max. power" instead of the "default". This is only a workaround, since actually, the 2200BG is supposed to conbserve battery by chooisng appropriate transmission power level. Turns out, the "appropriate" is not practically enough.

    Any ideas?

I like Broadcom, they've been doing 802.11g longer than Intel and they're normally a little cheaper.

I'm getting both for the same price - so the only question is performance. Any ideas about that?

They are so similar at this point, though there is extra software with Intel now, so I'd probably go that way.

I'm finally almost convinced to go ahead with Intel 2200BG rather than Broadcom 54g, for the following reasons:

1- I looked at several forums etc. Except for one post which merely mentioned Broadcom giving better performance, I really couldn't find details. Most people simple mention that Broadcom is better being an earlier player in the Wi-Fi market.

2- Broadcom provides little to no support on their Wi-Fi products. They have no adapter-specific or software-specific documentation or drivers on their website. So, if you go for a Compaq notebook, you can get drivers only from the HP Support site. Intel, on the other hand provides all drivers on intel.com, although they recommend getting the same from the vendor (HP) instead, and extensive documentation on their products.

3- Having played with the 2200BG settings on the V2000 I returned, I finally know how to fix things. I'm not sure if I'll get enough documentation to tweak the Broadcom one, in case I need to.

4- I like the cute "Centrino" sticker on my notebook. ;-)

5- Finally, I do have a soft spot for a co. I have worked with for a year. ;-)

thanks for doing the research rahuja! i think i'm going to go w/intel too. i've also read that broadcom was ahead of the pack during the early implementation of G, but it sucks that they haven't kept their lead by offering great software and updates.

That's another reason why I'll go w/Nvidia over ATI, their software and drivers are impeecable and more flexible and better featured and ATI with numberous display, multidisplay and overlay on multidisplay options. ATI can't match that.

    Broadcom = bleh.

Don't get me wrong, it works great if you're just one of the "hey, I wanna browse the net" kinda people. Lan/Wan browsing, etc... It's fine.

    But.

If you want linux, forget about it. Need a promisuous mode driver for sniffing or net forensics? Forget about.

    I'd do the Intel.

    [ :)]

Unless you don't need the things I mentioned. Then Broadcom is fine.
