    Hi

I received my new notebook today and am absolutely
thrilled with it, however i have a question about internet
    software installations.

I used the wifi to connect to someone elses internet connection
to install all of my computers internet security software and updates
(nortan internet security 2007) but i have'nt installed my isp's software
yet i will be doing that this weekend.

As this is my first computer this is my first time installing internet
software so what i really need to know is, is it alright
that i have installed my internet security software before my
    isp software?

P.S. My ISP provider is sky just in case that helps.

    Thankyou

Why would you install software your ISP provided to you? What additional function or purpose does it serve?

They're usually an ISP flavored browser (reskinned Internet Explorer) and some popular (bloated) security programs. I wouldn't install them.

ISP software is a bunch of garbage that you should never need. I used to let them install it.

Twice, I let ISP's install software, and twice they screwed up my system and all my email and internet programs. You shouldn't need that software!

The family desktop im using at the moment is connected
to our router through ethernet, and because its faster
i want to connect my laptop to the router with ethernet
as well to create a network, which means i will have to load
our sky isp software on my laptop to update the browser etc.

The good news is that the internet security provided with my isp
is mcafee and is optional so i will just skip that part and keep
    my current security.

In the control panal on windows vista there are two
internet folders (network and sharing centre & internet options)
when i install the isp software and connect the ethernet cable
from the laptop to the router is there anything in these folders
    that needs to be activated?

You should beable to load the connection info into the router and not need the ISP software.

In most all cases all the ISP Browser do is put their name on it and add tool bars. Nothing I would want on mine, particularly if its IE.

You do not need the ISP software. Period.

I would like to thank everybody for your help, i installed
the ethernet cable from the router to my notebook this morning
and everything seems to be working fine.

And you were all right about not having to install the isp software,
after connecting the ethernet cable from the router to my notebook
i turned it on and everything seemed to connect automatically
    to our network.

If everyone could let me know if there is anything else
i need to do i would really appreciate it.

Check your router and make sure the wireless has WPA(2) security active. If off or WEP this needs to be changed. If your not going to use wireless turn the radio off in the router. But my guess is that you will need it, so set it up with WPA(2) Personal AES 20+ random chr and you will be fine. I use www.grc.com for my random generated keys, all printable chr. Then just grab 20 form the string. save these stings to a notepad doc. Te odds of you typing them in correctly the first time is low. Copy and Paste is the only way to go. You will need the key if you connect anyone ease to your AP/router.
