    Hi all

I am preparing to setup Internet Connection sharing of some sort, just after some guidance, i have 4 PCs running Win 2000 and a laptop that will be running XP, I have about 300metres between the host machine and the client, the other clients are near enough next to the host! The room with the client machine has 2 phone sockets, what would be the best method of sharing the internet from the host to this client!

I have a few ideas but i'm not certain on them:

If the one of the phone sockets is activated we can wire up the laptop to connect to the network via an adsl filter and gain internet access like that, to confirm this would use the original internet connection and wouldn't require a new connection setup! yes? no? alternativly install a RJ-45 socket on the wall and connect that way, again using the same connection!

Obviously wiring down 300metres isn't practical and then there is wireless, setup a wireless connection to include the other clients near the host and installed signal receivers in the corridor to gain the distance required for internet!

Sorry think I went on abit there, if you can make sense of it please advise what would be the best course of action to set this client up for sharing!

Main point use existing interent connection

    Regards

Type of internet connection: dial-up or DSL?
Do all the close clients have wired LAN connections?
Which is the 300 meter client, Windows 2K PC or Windows XP laptop?
Does the 300 meter client have wireless already?
What does the 300 meters consist of; buiding, air, forest, etc?

First off, LOL is there forest in the way!

Type of internet connection would be dsl, the close clients make up the network at the moment and yes they are on a wired LAN, the XP laptop will be 300 meters away and the 2K machine will hopefully act as the host, the laptop is this one:

I'm sure it has wireless yes, the 300 meter distance consists of is just building standard corridors, normal building!

    Regards thanks for the assistance

Well, 300 meters is over 3 football fields. That is quite a distance in a normal building. A normal wireless signal will usually only travel 100 feet indoors, if you're lucky. Think you'll have to do a wired solution for this one.

Ok thanks, just wondering is there any thing I can use to act as a host that would be in between the 2k machine and xp laptop? wired solution is gunna be a biatch cause of the distance and planning of wiring :(

would it be beneficial to set an additional machine up and use wireless going down to that machine from the 2k machine and onto the xp laptop?

yes, it looks like it has to be wired but really wanna do wireless to cut down on costs, wiring mess and planning!

    Thanks for the help :D

If all are coming off the same transformer tap, you may get a powerline carrier to work. It use the AC wiring in the house. Requires a device on each end, and are expensive. These work fine in houses but have not tried them between different houses. If it goes through a transformer you will loose/degrade the signal. The way it works is that in imposes a digital noise on the sine wave. Then it decodes it at the other end. I use to have to maintain equipment like this, was used in lighting control of a large 3 story building. Worked real good when it was new. But has the hardware aged units started to drift and required constant attention. I was responsable for keeping them working. I uses a scope to tune them as they drifted.
