    Vostro 1500 1 month old
    Vista Business

Its connected wireless to a linksys WRT54G with Tomato firmware
There are three other computers and all have the same workgroup name
All the others are XP pro
    Firewall is off
    Kaspersky is the anti virus
    Windows defender is off
All the other computers work fuine and connect to each other and all see the Vista notebook.

The Vista notebook cannot see the other computers but can ping them.

IE is set to automaticly detect settings and DNS is running

I cannot update windows and IE will not load any address.

This is driving me nuts Help

I'm going to run Spybot now and Ad aware to see if it helps

Post the results of ipconfig /all.

Then compare it to your other PC's. If nothing is getting out, the gateway is not set. If you can ping an out side IP, but not the name, the DNS servers are incorrect.

Check to make sure the internet settings are not using a proxy. Connect to the router and see what info it is receiving (DNS). Also check to make sure the TCP/IP service properties are set to obtain automaticly. If not you can enter an alternate DNS, it's kind of a patch. But will get you working.

I tried upgrading the tomato firmware and IE is not set to use a proxy and it is set to obtain an ip automatically.

Still not right, tell me more about alternate DNS

I even tried to connect to my neighbors network and it connects and same thing Firefox works and not IE

If you get port properties there is a list of services. At the very bottom is TCP/IP, select it and get properties. Then you will be presented a window which should be set to Obtain an IP and Obtain DNS auto. You can tell it to use any DNS you want. There are several DNS services if you don't want to use the supplied numbers.

    Have you tried resetting IE?

    1. Go into Control Panel, and choose "Internet Options".
    2. Under the "Advanced" tab, press the "RESET" button at the lower right

Sorry. I'm out of ideas. In truth, I set my firewall to block IE and only use Firefox.

Almost sounds like something hijacked your IE. Do some extensive scan for adware/spyware and root kits.

Sometimes firewalls can block applications, something else to check. If you installed symantic (norton) it has done it's usual mess. It has a history of breaking things.

I would never in a million years use any symantic products. I do have Kaspersky internet security but have disabled it during the trouble shooting process, but I am still not even ruling it out completely. I like a clean system and am going to format eventually to remove the dell bloatware but just insist on figuring tis out before I do that. I kinda like the process of trouble shooting.

"Internet Explorer cannot display the web page"

If i type google.com in the URL it says:

"The Address is not Valid" and the URL displays "http:///"

Excellent suggestion AKAJohnDoe, many times I have used system restore, which brings back the setup in which the Internet was working well, this works 99% of the time.

I see a few I have not tried but most I have and system restore is not an option. There is no restore point prior to about 2 weeks before this happen and I know I set a restore point when i received the notebook.

I will let you guys know when i get through the list

Then you should have a restore point.

Have you tried to uninstall IE? If you do so, turn off any anti-spyware so the registers can be changed without a problem, and then re-install IE.

No seriously, There is no restore point and IE is part of Vista and has no uninstall unless I'm missing something. I will look again today.

    Jetster,
To remove IE you should be able to go into Add/Remove Programs, then select Windows Components. If that's the same in Vista as it is XP, it will work. I haven't used Vista yet. Then you can try reinstalling

IE cannot be removed in Vista, at least without extraordinary means. You may, however, be able to download IE7 and reinstall it over the top of the existing install if IE7 is available from Microsoft as a stand-alone for Vista.

That's correct, that's the whole story against Bill Gate's monopole. IE is an integral part of Windows.

    Have you done this?

    1. Start Internet Explorer 7.
    2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
    3. On the Advanced tab, click Reset.
    4. In the Rest Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset to confirm.

Actually the problem was the antivirus. Even when turned off it had a driver installed in the network properities that was causing the problem
