Buy an ethernet cable, plug one end into your computer and the other into an unused port on the back of your router.

Also you could consider a 802.11n wireless router and wireless card, if you have a bit of money to spare.

Just make sure your ISP's speed is fast enough to make it worth the while. If your ISP is giving you a speed that is significantly less than 100Mbits/sec, then using a wired connection to your router, or an "N" wireless router, won't make that much of a difference to your internet speed.

pretty sure that he has his wireless on and a cat6 cable plugged into his LAN port on his computer, and that is his complaint.

    What OS? Vista?

START > right click PROPERTIES, choose MANAGE NETWORK CONNECTIONS, right click your wireless adapter and choose DISABLE

(you will need to ENABLE it when you disconnect the cable)

I find VISTA will often defer to the wireless connection even when plugged into the LAN with a cable

Do what Gerryf19 says. I always disable my wireless when I need the high speed of direct connection. They sometimes compete.

It is possible you laptop has a button somewhere on the keyboard or around the chassis that lets you turn on and off the wireless card with just a push of a button -- which is more convenient than going into network connections.

Be sure you remember where your network connections is on your OS. Because there will be times when you will be somewhere else not near a direct connection and want to turn your wireless back on.
