I just got a new wireless modem router and I know nothing about how to use it.

The setup is confusing me even more, I don't know what to do..

I have a LAN wire in my room and that's where my internet comes from.

What am I supposed to do?

The Modem is NETGEAR DG834 with 54 MBPS.

And do I have to use a DSL filter?

Do you have DSL service? If you have a phone connected to the same line then you'll need the filter.

If you have DSL service and is paying for a DSL line from your ISP (Internet Service Provider) then you'll need to use that line (the wire you describe that's in your room) which should most likely be an RJ-11 connection which should go to the DSL/Line in port at the back of the Modem/Router.

From there you have to connect an ethernet cable (RJ-45) to one of the free 4 ports at the back of the Router/Modem to configure it. Configure your computer's IP Settings like this. First do a Start --> Run command (or Windows Logo + R) and type ncpa.cpl and hit enter. Right click on your LAN connection (not Wireless) and choose Properties. Scroll down if needed and select Internet Protocol V4 from the list and then click Properties. Here you will change your IP Settings to the following:

    IP Address: 192.168.0.2
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 192.168.0.1

    DNS: 192.168.0.1

After doing this open up your Internet Browsing app. and type 192.168.0.1 in the address list and hit enter. You should be presented with the Modem's configuration home page where it ask for a username/password. The default username should be admin and the password should be password

After logging into the Modem you should begin to configure it by changing the default user/pass, setting WPA security on it for the Wireless, and getting yourself set up for the Internet. Now I don't know what type of DSL service you may have and I don't have any first-hand experience with that Modem/Router but if setting the Internet/Gateway IP Address to Automatic (which would most likely be under the WAN setting) doesn't get you connected to the Internet then I suggest giving your ISP a call and try have them walking you through setting it up. Because you might need to enter special info. into the Modem's config. settings to get on the Internet.

BTW, these are two great links on info about your Modem. Link | Link
