As the title says I need a new router, My old router crapped out on me and now I can't do anything wireless. I don't know anything about routers except that they let me use my laptop and ps3 wirelessly. My budget is about $100 and am willing to go higher if it will last long and won't give me any problems. and I was wondering is there a router that can give me an option to have my NAT type open, moderate, strict with just a click of a button and not have to open all these ports that might not even fix my NAT type?

    Hi,
I have a suggestion for you, but it might be out of your budget. Its actually the current one I have. The WNDR3700 by Netgear. However, you may need a router as the WNDR3700 is just a network hub you plug into a wired/wireless modem.. so perhaps something else...

Frankly I've always gone with Netgear as I find their products superior than most (there are others on par with Netgeat though).

Similarly I put up a similar thread like you, and thought I would put here if it will help. The thread itself is differnt, but many people have put their own suggestion, I thought you might like to read.

    Hope this helps :)

EDIT: Forgot to add, the WNDR3700 is dual band, Both 'G' and 'N' bands are streamed. Your computers can hit 'N' while like me the ps3 has 'G' connectivity. And its fast.

Sounds like you want a SPI Firewall router. It's easier to just put the pc in a DMZ then all ports are open and NO lag due to the SPI FW.

There are many routers to choose from. I would suggest you look over SmallNetBuilder . They have a table that compares routers speed/performance. The only advice I can not stress enough is DO NOT BUT BELKIN. These are not reliable, they do test good but are not stable.

So you can't use the wndr3700 like a regular router? Like have the router connected to my modem and than set everything up wirelessly? I don't understand what you said about the wndr3700.

Well I guess I no longer need a new router since it turns out that my laptop started working wirelessly again, Now I have to see if my brothers PS3 works wirelessly again.

Thanks jubbing and blue68f100 for the help I almost bought the WNDR3700 by Netgear for $150 until I saw that the Ethernet cable was on the floor and I was still online.haha.

I have another question, Does anyone know how to set my NAT Type from Moderate to Open? I've been having a problem with it for quite awhile but everything I try it just stays the same

    LOL mate....

    thats funny.

Basically the wndr3700 is not a modem router.. just a router (meaning you cannot plug a normal telephone line into it, just an ethernet cable). If you have a modem router that you can connect it to, the wndr3700 works wonders. Down the line i'd still recommend the wndr3700 as a dual band, its just turns a house with wired router into wireless one.

DLINK DIR-655, can be had for less than $100. Very configurable and very stable.
