I live in a one bedroom apartment and my router for the past 2 years has been the ASUS RT-AC68U.

I did also buy the AC88U and AC3200 and refunded them as they kept disconnecting my devices randomly, great hardware spoiled by crappy ASUS firmware. Even tried all the Merlin builds. So now I am wondering, shall I stick to my current router or do you recommend anything better like the Night Hawk R7000? (I heard the newer Night Hawks have problems too)

Netgear R7000 has only marginally better hardware than AC68U, not really an upgrade.
All in all AC-68U is not something you need to upgrade and you won't for a considerable time.

Right, that's what I thought but just wanted to confirm from the Pros. As in, I won't notice any real world difference from a new router.

Here are my current results/ ping time on the AC68U:

I would keep the AC68U, it's a fast and solid router. Used mine for 18 months without a glitch until I switched to the AC5300 which as also been rock solid so far.

yeah I have the AC68U still as a backup router. I am very impressed with the AC5300 though, not one connection drop since I got it and I thought I would have the same disconnection headaches that I had with my previous AC3200 due to its flaky Smart Connect Feature. But the Smart Connect on the AC5300 actually works as it was supposed to finally.

I didn't keep the AC68U, sold it once I confirmed the AC5300 was stable, I've been using Smart Connect without any issues in it as well. I run mine in AP mode, internet access is managed by my firewall appliance.
