Wall jack -> modem -> router (wan or internet port)
then your pc will connect to one of the open lan ports.

Power up the modem, wait 2 min, power up the router wait 1 min, power up your PC in that order.

Setup must be done with a wired connection.

Once the router is reset back to factory,
    1. login, def page for most are 192.168.1.1, change password if prompted. if not do it anyway.
    2. Then you need to set it up for your ISP. If a wizard option is available use it.
    3. The router should re-boot and connect to your isp. If it does not connect to your ISP, re check all of your setting. If all are correct and this is cable and/or other service it requires your MAC address to be clone into the router. This way your ISP think it you. A lot if ISP that do not require auth to connect use a MAC address of the pc used to setup the account to control access. If you do not have that pc mac address, you will need to contact your isp and have them reset it to your new pc.

You should now have internet access on the wired side, and wireless should be open.

For a quick test your router should be open and should be able to connect wirelessly.

If your router is a wireless type, continue on. I like to use the notebook for this part of the wireless router setup. Other wise you will need to use a usb thumb drive to transfer the key.

Login to the routers admin section. If you have a wizard for quick setup run it if not continue.
    1. All routers main pages are different so I will be general. Go to the wireless section.
    2. Change your def SSID MAX 20 chr NO Spaces allowed, 4-8 chr are fine.
    3. if your notebook is new, most all have a 11g wireless card, so set the radio to 11g only if you do not have any old equipment requiring it.
    4. set security for closed WPA-PSK or WPA-TKIP
    5. you will then be asked for a pass phrase. I prefer using grc.com random key generator, all printable char. I copy them to a notepad doc and save it. Then I copy and paste the max chr allowed or a min of 12-20. Then save your settings. Also save the key you used to the note pad doc. You will need this to setup your wireless clients.

Now with your NB, have your nb try to connect to your router, when prompted paste the key used to setup the router. If all went well you are now setup and working.

99% of all errors happen in the key. I am a poor typest so it easier for me to cut and paste.

I hope this get you going.

Wired connection works! That was great and I was happy, but I can't get wireless to work.
I did everything you said, and then went to connect and it found it, asked for my WPA key that I got, so I out it in, but it does nothing, it says its conneced by aqurring a IP, when I go to status it says invaild IP. I tied to repair the connect but it got to the renew part and stopped.

Open up properties for your port and edit your connection. All you need in services is clinet for MS network and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and file and printer sharing if you plan on sharing files.

Then select Wireless Networks and edit (properties) for your connection. Make sure it is WPA. If not edit it. If you are using MS Zero Config, make sure you disable any mfg utility. If you use more the 20 chr MS zero config complains.

Did it work with out any security?

If not your firewall may be blocking the subnet.

I would go through the wpa setup again. I would use a small pass key and see it it works It's possiable to have the keys to long and some don't accept all printable char, try using A-Z, a-z, 0-9 in 10-12 chrs. length.
