    Hi people,

Lets say I connect my pc/laptop to a network wirelessly or via cable, doesnt matter. The network has no dhcp. I dont have any information of the network.

How can I know which ip range they use?

    Thnx.

I have tried ipscan or such, but those detect who is on your own network/ip range.

The only way to know would be to check another computer or the router.

You ask. If you are welcome on their network, they'll gladly give you that information.

Manually assigning IP addresses and using port security are excellent security tools - please don't try to bypass them.

    Hm ok.
I think there is a way to get the ip adres range, but it will take a whole lot of time. Setting your own static ip and scanning all ranges one by one you'll eventually get a ping/scan result. Im sure someone has written a script, batchprogram, etc for this.

Well, talking about securing a network its best you try to break in yourself first, dont you think?

So, this is your own network you're trying to break into?

No, that would be illegal and just plain wrong. Why on earth would you think that? Besides, you aren't doing this yourself, are you? You don't know how to go about breaking into a network, so you're asking all of us for help.

If the network is connected to the internet and every computer has a real IP address (is accessible directly from the internet), chances are you can get the IP range by searching for the network's InternetServiceProvider in an IP database. However, if it's a well known network, they'd be sure to add extra security so you won't be able to access it.

Edit: If you're trying to break into your own network I doubt the advice above would help. Why not do like the rest of us and use MAC filtering and WPA? That should keep your intruder busy :D

Nope, it is not my own network, its from a friend. He uses WPA2 and I just cracked his password.

Well I guess I have the answer. Like the books say, no system is 100% secure.

    Thnx for the inputs all.

How did you crack his WPA2 encryption?

By crack and trying to sound cool, he means he found it in a piece of paper, it was the name of his friend's pet, TV show or another personal affection.

Lithus, I agree. This entire topic is useless.
