    Hey all,
I'm running Vista Basic on my Dell laptop. Was setting it up to see the shared folder on my host PC. I changed the computer name of the Dell. Now, in Windows Explorer under My Network it has an entry for the new name and the old name.

How do I delete the one under the old name?

And I'm thinking the only computer name that should be on the Dell under My Network is the name of the host computer that I'm sharing a file on, is that right? As like I said, it's also showing an entry for the Dells new computer name too.

So I'm showing entires for both the new and old computer name of the Dell plus that of the host PC. I want to delete the first two. Or in Vista, is the Dells current computer name "supposed" to be listed in My Network?

    Thanks.

Pretty sure he is talking about "computers near me" in the old equivalent of the Network Neighborhood rather han mapped drives.

To the OP, what is happening here is that when you create a network workgroup, all the computers have an election to pick a "master browser"--the winner then collects information about the network, saves it, and then passes it out to all the other computers. The other computers then cache this information.

So, whichever computer is your master recorded and cached your first name, then added the second as a network resource when you renamed it. Eventually, the master browser clears the cache and retransmits it to other machines.

It is possible, therefore, that a refresh as I described above will result in the old name reappearing, but it should disappear eventually

    Thanks all,
After rebooting the laptop, the invalid entry(original computer name before I changed it) is gone.

I also discovered the refresh option described by Gerry, thanks for that.

In Windows XP, My Network doesn't list the computers own name, just that of the Host computer that's sharing a folder.

I guess in Vista it's different, as My Network lists the computers own name as well as the Host computer. That's what is confusing me.
