For for my college they say that I must hook up my laptop to my router first with an ethernet cable and configure settings like security, SSID, etc. before connecting the access point to the jack in the wall and getting online. Can I do this wirelessly? btw I have a MacBook Air and I plan to get an Airport extreme 802.11n router and I don't want to have to buy the USB Ethernet adapter if I don't need to

If your Airport router doesn't have ethernet you can configure a router wirelessly but, it's not recommended.

u can IF ur router has a wireless on by default and therefore a wireless network by default... just connect to it and go to the routers adress (check ur ip and just put the same x.x.x.1)

From what i've heard it's always been recommended to connect the computer/laptop to the router via an ethernet cable to configure the router's settings...but I don't believe it will have issues if u do configure it wirelessly, atleast for most settings...I think it is recommened because of reasons that i've personally experienced such as configuring pages timing out sometimes etc...

If u have issues configuring the router...just try and get another laptop w/ an ethernet port.

Edit: But then again..after thinking about it...I don't believe it's possible to change and configure a router's setting initially wirelessly, for the first time that is.

I never heard that, the router can be connected into the jack as you work with it. However if you apply changes to the router wirelessly, the router will tell you that you will be disconnected while it update its settings, during that time you will almost sure loose connection, that's why is recommended to do it using Ethernet.

A downside of the MBA, lack of the ethernet port.

Its not a worry though since you only have to configure the router once and you can do it with any computer with a ethernet port and an internet browser.
