i believe you will need a router or switch of some sort...
it may be possible to plug them in and do manual DNS and subnet settings or w/e but idk about that.

You need to get a crossover cable. Look them up on eBay or whatever retailer is near you. Also have you tried connecting via Bluetooth. You can network that way as well.

It's the simplest solutions that are the hardest sometimes.

A crossover cable will work, but I have read that a standard cable has worked for some...not sure :/

A standard cable ought to work. If you have a router, even better. Both PC to PC only requires you use Static IP address

    So

1.Go to your Network from your Windows Start Menu
    2. Right click and choose "Properties"
    3. In the left hand side, choose Manage a Connection
    4. Right click over your Ethernet card and select "Properties"
    5. Select Internet Protocol Verion 4(TCP/IPv4) Properties
    6. In General Tap, select "Use the following address" instead of Obtain an IP Address automically.
    7. On PC 1, put any valid IP address and subnet mask
8 On PC2, put any different IP Address but the same subnet mask

Now the two PCs should be able to talk to each other in absence of a network routing device.

If you are having trouble be sure to turn off Firewall briefly.

The quick check is to ping each other via IP address

    http://www.home-network-help.com/ad-hoc-wireless.html

    1) Setup an Ad-hoc network connection on the Vista computer thats connected to the internet. Use a WPA encryption mode. Make sure you turn on Internet Sharing connection

    2) On the 2nd notebook, search for the Ad-hoc network and WPA key and you should be networked and connected to the internet

Generally, the new standard cables (as long as you don't go with el cheapos) should be able to handle direct system-to-system without needing a special cross-over cable.

If your pc's has GigE ports and the mfg followed the recommended std, a std cable with work. GigE is suppose to auto nogiate. Otherwise you will need a crossover cable. You will need to set static IP's on both PC's.

If you have 11n available use the adhoc config it may be easier.

If you have a router or switch no additional cables will be required. All you need to do is setup the sharing so you can move files.

You will get a message that you have limited connective, this is do to the facr it does not see the internet, so just ignore.
