using '-a' before the IP address while pinging reveals the computers name.

and using that MAC ID can be found too.

So how does one stay stealth on net ?

I believe there is a program with an integrated firewall which allows you to be stealth in any parameters. It covers your traces or leads. I forgot the name of this program but I know its a firewall with an integrated feature. I have to find it out though.

On the other hand, proxies may also work too for stealth mode

Well yeah it uses Tor network. Keep in mind that some sites don't allow Tor and you gotta turn it off(which is not a problem and if you use Firefox there is a Tor extension). Your surfing speed will probably decrease because when you use the Tor network you depend mostly of donated bandwidth( relays)..Also Tor doesn't work with p2p( old info maybe it works now..)
Check Tor's website for more detailed info because I haven't used Tor in a really long time so there might be a lots of improvements & information that I'm not aware of.

Okay so if someone runs a Tracert or Pings my IP will he be able to get info about my sys and MAc id?

    how about someone using NMap?

i want a software which blocks port scans on my system.

software sucks for blocking anything. thats what a firewall is for. what the hell are you so worried about it for? lol

nmap is software that checks a list of common open ports.

firewall is what blocks all incoming ports other then the ones you specify.

your mac address will be noticable no matter the case unless you ssh tunnel.

mac address is nothing personal but it can help track down who made your computer and various other pieces that are pointless.

tracert will tell me what IP block you are on and in the end your ISP.

tor is the cheap and easy way to do it. if you really want to get the speed that you deserve and tunnel everything and encrypt every bit of it then you need to get a shell account and SSH.

Putty is an ssh client correct. it also allows you to tunnel from your localhost.
