I have an IBM T31 with built in WiFi. I need to know how I can increase the signal (reception) strength.

The obvious stuff has been done. Move as close as possible to the signal source etc...

Is there some type of external (USB) adapter available for laptops that will INCREASE the WiFi signal strength (dbi) ??

BTW, I don't have control over the router's output signal.

Since you don't want to get salad on your cell phone, use hawking technologies, they have real equipment to extend the coverage without making a foul of yourself, plus, you don't have to pay more money to the cell phone carriers ;)

This is incredible. You should also try putting your access point into the bathroom fullfilled with foil!

I am very confused about the video, where should I connect both ends of Ethernet cable to? connect to the ethernet port so that I can get better wifi signal? does it even make sense?

More signal to the upper floor will definitely increase the throughput for the upper floor computers.
