I am visiting a relative for a few days. I will access the internet through his wireless network. The network, I guess, is not secured. No password is required to gain access. Can he track my net-surfing habits? Thanks.

He could, theoretically, through a variety of methods. But I doubt he is going to go to those efforts to track you. He's got an unsecured network, so he can't be to worried about security. :p

If not secure anyone who wants can track every one else if they wanted to, with proper software. Why don't you do him a favor and setup security for them. He may find he has a faster connections if there are a bunch of leaches. Besides I don't think he want the authorities coming by and giving him a visit because one leach did something real bad and was traced back to him. Now if he lives in the country far away from his neighbors (and main road) he is probably ok.

of course anything is possible, but why would a relative track your internet surfing habits? with or without security, if your on his network, anything can happen.

You want security then connect to a VPN while you're at his place.

Most routers, secure or not do keep a log. As to whether he wants to look at it...That's a question only he can answer.

Would he still be able to track him if he uses anonymizer or some kind of proxy veil?

Yes because the first instance he is connecting through other than his own computer is the router, only after then will a proxy shield him. Since he is in a local network the proxy is for a world wide web. Most routers I find don't keep a log and I know mine doesn't. Even if it did record a log it would most likely be only ip addresses, and unless he knows the IP address of the sites you are going to a doubt it will matter. I am fairly positive if you were looking at pr0n it wouldn' say...

Yes he can sort of check your habits but he would need to be sniffing your traffic to see what sites your visiting. Unless there is a firewall or IDS on the network he prob won't have the ability to see WHAT your doing whilst on the net, just your MAC address, Private IP Address and how long you were connected to his router for.
