I have 6Mbps Comcast Cable. I think they are bumping it up to 8 at some point.

    At home I have a 1.5Mbit (about 170k/sec) DSL
    At work, I have a 10Mbit (about 1200kbyte/sec) cable

Most broadband companies have different packages. These vary by company, region, etc.
Right now sbc/att in my area are offering dsl 1.5 lines @ 12.99/month.
Your question is what package do you need? If your just an avid net surfer you dont need more
than a 1.5mbit line. but if your an intense gamer maybe look into 3.0mbit. If you have a large household
with several users gaming, surfing, etc then you might want to consider higher speeds. As far as which is better, DSL or cable? DSL is more consistant but offers slower speeds, cable is faster, but not consistant.

somewhere like 39.95-42.95 if you have comcast cable (like i do) and 57.95 if you don't (like chazman)

they say 6MBPS but it really isn't ever that fast. 8 is avialable but you have to pay more.

im on 1.5mbs and its 70$ AUD a month, the company that owns the phone network in australia sells its 1.5mbs lines to phone companies for 50$ so 60$ is about the cheapest you can get. yay for being ripped off.

It depends on your subscribed speed. Both cable and DSL offer pretty much the same speed, but if you go cheap you get slow access, if you need more speed, it will cost you more money. There are advantages to each. And they depend primarily on what you need the highspeed for. If you just surf the web and email, and typical 1.5Megabit will suffice. If you intend to file share or play heavy games, or have multiple computers, go with a 3.0 or a 6.0. Speeds that fast are offered by both, cable companies and DSL providers.

Does anyone know why the connection speed is so slow in the states?
I was kind of shocked when I came here because the cost for 6Mbps connection is like $40~45. When I was in Japan, 45Mbps ADSL was like $30 and 100Mbps connection was like $65. Is it because of the population and size of land?

I'm living w/my parents, and we just got the DSL from Enter.net about 6 months ago. However, it seems to be almost as slow at times as dial-up.....even more so, sometimes when the connection just keeps "timing out" on whatever page I go to.
    PMZ
PS--We REALLY need to upgrade. It's driving me crazy.

I go through Comcast Cable which offers internet connections of 6MB, which I have never been able to reach. Lately it has been running much slower, 1.5MB or so. One thing that is nice though is we pay for HSI and limited basic, but when the contractor came out to install the HSI it would not connect because he placed caps on our cable for limited basic. He then had to unfilter our connection so we have full cable at a $45 price. He said they can do nothing about it because we are paying for HSI, but can not connect with limited basic only. I know this has worked on a few seperate occassions if you are in apartment buildings. Old wiring and muliple connections help. Just a trick you might try doing if you live in an apartment building.

Camsimple: Sorry to hear about Comcast shafting you. I am a certified tech for several cable companies, Comcast being 1 of them. If your not experiencing intermittent service, doesnt sound like you are, then your download speed is code dependant. Your account is setup via coding on the head end. I would call customer service and have them verify your service coding. Depending on your area, your HSI may use a channel that is offered in the channel tier that also covers the expanded basic. Then at that rate, they cant trap out the expanded basic, but this will not affect the download rate. If you pay for 6MB you should receive that amount or close to it, depending on local server lag.
If you were experiencing internittent service issues, then yes, bad cable lines(rg-59) bad splitters, too many splitters, etc will be the cause.

Regarding the WiFi, my computer's access point manager shows that the speed is 54Mbps, of course it's the speed between my PC and the Wifi router.

I think I've read that article too, that man used a private WiFi connection to download and share child pronography video.

Even if the neighbor don't know you, but the router still records your MAC address and your connections details into logs. It's why people look for software on Internet on order to change MAC address of their WiFi hardware.

Well my DSL was about 2mb down a around 400 up, but I was paying for 3mb down and don't remember what the up was. Then I quit it because I had a moral objection to AT&T and them thinking they owned my personal info (they really do, its in the privacy policy) so I went to Comcast. I now get 6 down and 348 up, and that is what I pay for. In the fall they promise to double the speed, we will see.

My ISP has the monopoly in my area. Since I am in a rural part of NY, I pay for 768down and 256up and i pay 44.95.... A rip-off in my opinion. If there was Comcast or Verizon in my area, I would have it.

that is a huge rip off imo. I'm waiting for the verizon fios to come to my area, I'm in nyc but since I live in a building, its a lot harder since they have to pre wire EVERYONE in the building first, and then come and wire whoever wants the service, but it is faaaast. the fastest package they offer is 30 down 5 up
I plan to get the middle which is 15 down and 2 up for only 45/mo.

    10mbps RCN CABLE QUEENS,NY. $25 month + tax & fees = $31

10mbps is nice when transfering files with a group of friends VIA MSN, Yahoo, and other messengers. Also fast on torrent files(sometimes).

But for the most part websites, P2P, and download sites limit their bandwith so who really needs 10mbps? RCN gave me a sweet deal so I took it.

Before that I was taping in my neighbors unsecure. I got about 1.5mbps.
