    Hi,

I will soon get my first notebook and I've never used wireless LAN before. Can you tell me how it works actually? May I simply turn on the notebook near an access point and get the signal? And is wireless LAN to be paid anywhere...? I know some access point are free but what about those that are not (are there a lot of free access point)?

sorry I really know nothing about this and just wonder how it works.

    Regards

    1. if you want to use it at home, you need a wireless router plugged into your cable/dsl modem

    2. you can find free access points at www.wififreespot.com

    3. you can buy "airtime" from places like starbucks, borders, etc.

I just ordered a laptop and am waiting for it to arrive (BTW the site was a great help in picking it out). My dad has a wireless router and my dsl on my desktop is hooked up to it. So when I get my laptop am I going to be ready to roll for wi-fi to connect anywhere in my house? I'm going to able to chill in the living room and go on the net without any cords right?
