How do you know if you've been MAC-filtered?

I believe in free hot spots.

But I think I have been banned from one.

I go to this Cafe, where I have gone for over a year. Recently I think I have been banned.

It started about 3 weeks ago when I started playing CSS and downloading a few torrents (nothing huge -- a friend finished an art movie 2GB and I made sure my DL speed never went above 60KB/sec for respect of their bandwidth).

Well now I can't connect my Sony there anymore. Everyone else is on the internet though.

So I brought my ThinkPad and it connected to the internet.

After 2 days of playing CSS I can no longer connect!

Basically it says my computer is connected but I can't get a signal. Also sent packets are over 11,000 but received is less than 30.

What might be going on here?

oh wait, you can connect to the web but just not the CSS site? If so then it is possible they blocked the CSS site at the router.

Yeah I've thought about the WNIC but I don't want to get around it if I was banned.

I'll just move to a different cafe from now on -- I think I should be able to play CSS.

Grumpy: No, I can't even connect to the web. It all started because I played CSS. Both laptops connect to the internet everywhere else; just not this particular location.

Jade, you've been mac filtered/banned...I guess they don't like CSS. Just move to another café ;)

    They've just lost a customer :(

You might want to check with the new café if it's cool to play on their bandwidth.

ahhh..OK I was not sure if I was reading it right...spent a hard day shopping so I am delerious... ;)

So yeah it's possible they whacked ya for using too much bandwidth. We had a free wifi site here in town and well the owners of the restaurant had no clue what they were really offering. They blamed the users for hogging bandwidth. I tried to explain that they really were at fault not the people who used it...so instead of trying to learn what they needed to do to setup a more controlled system they just stopped offering the service.

On a more postive not our town's muni wifi just dropped the price to $9.99/mo...but then again I have never been able to get better then a 500k/283k connection....but at least we have that option if I am not in the mood for Starbucks or, shudddder, McDonalds, or the lobby at Embassy Suites...hehehehehe...a couple weeks agao I went to a restaurant near Embassy and had a beautiful connection so I was able to eat and watch TV at the restaurant. How sad is THAT???...hehehehe...have a good one...sleepy time for me sorry the smacked your mac addy down.

BTW, cool of you to not go ahead and work around it...really not many people would just roll with it...many would well, extract they "due"...so good for you!!

I think it is so odd that McDonalds has wifi connections.

The Starbucks around here has pretty good wireless: 1300k/450k usually.

And today I found a new Cafe that will allow gaming -- I found out it is actually a nice place to find tons of CSS/COD2 players!! You have to pay $2.50 to use it or purchase a drink and get it for free. Not free but hey I get drinks anyway so its awesome. tomorrow there is going to be an informal CSS match =D

cool...that is not a bad price really for on-demand use. And yeah you always need something to nibble or drink while working or playing anyway so why not!

I so agree it's very, well, just wrong to know McDonalds has wifi access...around here it's through both Wayport or Boingo. Our's is not a free service but in some locations (I am guessing the really profitable stores) they have free access. I don't use it since I already have a t-mobile hotspot account so if I need fast access out of the house I head to SB's...

I really LOVE the t-mobile service. I would like it to be free but at $30/mo I can live with it. We travel a lot for business and I like to vary my work location depending on my mood that day so it works great for us. Here in Lompoc I get pretty consistent 800k/800k speed. I am not sure why they have such a fast upstream here but it's cool to take advantage of some days when I have done something to a database or a bunch of graphics to upload to a site.

Hopefully our Muni wifi will imporve over the next year. I have that too and it's just $10/mo. Nothing better then parking my rear end under a big shady tree in the park and working away. It's sort of renewing...

BTW, everyone talking about this CSS game has me intrigued enough that I have been peeking at around here and there...looks like you "guys" have a blast with it!! Who knows my one day I might actually try one of these fancy new online games!! I did like Wizardy when it was brand new. ;)
