Hello Mates, i have bought a 1 TB hard drive for the family server and i need to do 4 shared folders in the main shared folder and all of those shared folders would be protected by password/username.

I know i cannot do this in win xp by default, what is the best options we are looking at?

here is the schematics of what i want to do.

    ------------ -----------------
    -DRIVE -----------|Misc. Folders|
    ------------ -----------------
    |
    ----------------------
    - F1 | F2 | F3 | F4 -
    ----------------------

I was thinking you know how schools have logins into your personal folders...how would i achieve this?

hmmm... i would switch off the simple file sharing, which would allow me to specify access rights for various users... so it would be password protected, but on a slightly different level (xp profile).
would it work for you, or you definitely need to password protect directories without having to log in as a different user?

Hey entropy.cz, it would need to be more secure.

I dont want anyone that's not authorized to go in the protected folders and vice versa. It's because i am setting up 4 folders for 4 different people. So they can upload what ever without worrying about someone else going into there stuff.

ps: i am installing windows home server, maybe it will have more security incorporated?

    Thanks!

F!nn, you can create various permissions for various users/groups and various directories this way (you can give full control or permissions to modify, read & execute, display the directory content, read, write). when you switch off the simple file sharing, you'll get an extra tab in the directory permissions - security, and this is the place where you can set anything you need.

in the other words, noone that's not authorized can access protected folders without logging in with appropriate username/pwd.

anyway, i myself am pretty curious if there's some simplier and more handy solution... :)

I have no experience w/ Windows HS but entropy has the right idea IMO..as he mentioned; set up permissions on each folder for each user. To only allow certain users to access certain folders that they are authorized to access. This is the easiest and most sophisticated way of controlling user access to folders. It's the reason file/folder sharing is built into the OS.

After following entropy's link above, follow this one. Link

Again, I don't have any hands-on experience w/ Windows HS so idk if the file/folder security process is the same as XP/Vista but I can't imagine it behind much different.
