    OK....i have a computer and only one ethernet port, i have two nics, but no wireless nic...what i want to know is what i need to make my desktop a wireless access point (encrypted) so i can give my notebook internet

    It wouldn't be worth it. To attempt it, you would have to at least buy a wireless card for your desktop. For pretty much the same price, just get yourself a wireless AP (if you already have a wired router) or a wireless router. You can plug the desktop into the router through the ethernet port and the notebook can get access to the Internet through the wireless AP or router.
