    Hello all,

I am a complete newbie in area of network. I am trying to connect two home computers: laptop xp and desktop vista. I have been searching online but nothing. Right now, i have at&t dsl router providing internet to my laptop and desktop. On the connection between two computers, I want to allow full access on my vista desktop but allow only password permission on my laptop. How do I come about doing it? Do I need an additional hub or I can use the just the router to connect my two computers? How do i come about setting it up?? What is the difference in map drive and network share?

    Thank you in advance!!!

Thanks for the info. I did not know what or which worked best because i m new to network setup. I looked over with the topic you provided. After 3-4 hours I got it working ... I setup from home & small office network workgroup but took me sometimes to get it to share with other computer vista.

Glad you got it worked out! Having your computers networked for file sharing is great! Have you got a printer hooked up to the desktop computer? If you have a wireless router you can set it up so you can print from the laptop wirelessly also!

Three simple ways to do it:
    1. get a network-ready printer and plug it into one of the 4 LAN ports on the back of the router
    2. get a router with a slot for a USB connection and plug your USB printer into that, or
    3. get a wireless print server, such as the Netgear WGPS606 (which I have - been working fine for the last year)
