I am having difficulty connecting my new M1210 to my exisitng P4 desktop and printer. Perhaps someone here can help?

My old P4 desktop is plugged into wireless router with a cable. I have connected the same router to the M1210 wirelessly. Internet works fine. I just can't seem to connect the two computers over the wireless connection. My goal is to share some files, and print from the M1210 remotely.

When I use the XP Network Setup Wizard (on the M1210), the wizard finds that the network connection disconnected. The Local Area Connection is indicated as a Broadcom 440x 10/100 controller. I can't continue the wizard unless this is plugged in or connected.

    Suggestions anyone?

What OS is you Desktop running?

Is your M1210 assigned to the same workgroup as your Desktop? You can check this on each computer by right clicking on your 'My Computer' desktop icon and selecting properties, then switching over to the 'Computer Name' tab.

I'm moving this to the Networking forum where you'll get more help.

Yes, Workgroup on both computers is MSHOME.

Desktop is running XP (SP2) as well.

my suggestion would be don't use the wizard... :p

make sure both computers are on the same workgroup and both have unique computer names

second go to the Network Connections section of the control panel and make sure that both the laptop and desktop have "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" enabled in the approprate network adapter's properties

third, make sure that any firewall software you are running on both machines is setup to allow file and printer sharing

fourth, make sure that you have something actually shared on each computer

now go to your "My Network Places" on either machine. you may not have anything in there yet, so what you need to do is look for the "View Workgroup Computers" link on the left of the window. click that, and then you should have your computers displayed for use. once you access a network share once, it will be placed in your Network Places window for easy access.

    also, check nickspohn's guide http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=30162
