    Hi

I have been using an Old Verizon Westell Modem Model 2200 for something like 8 years give or take. Never had a problem with it at all.

Someone told me that these old modems will prevent you from getting faster speeds. I will be upgrading my speed next month.

I'm getting a new laptop (Old desktop to First Laptop) and just ordered
    a router model WNDR37AV (I want DB)

So now I'm looking for a new modem to go with my new router.

I'm not sure what to buy and if it has to be compatible with verizon. I have verizon dsl in NYC.

Are there certain models I need to buy ?

    Thanks so much :)

what dsl modems do verizon current dell/lease? Get one of those.

If all else fails, 'lease' a verizon-supplied modem for a month or three until you can find a cheaper, yet compatible modem to purchase.

    Can't lease a modem here .

I just went to my account and They want $49
for a modem and they don"t even tell you what model it is and don't even have a picture.

I'm not buying anything without knowing what I'm buying.

So do I need a certain modem so it's compatible with verizon DSL ?

Or can I buy any modem ?

Should I buy the same brand as the router I'm buying (WNDR37AV) ?

    Thanks

Any ADSL2+ modem will work with any DSL provider. You just might not be able to call VZ to get help setting up that modem's configuration because it isn't "officially" supported. Any modem that supports PPP CHAP authentication will work, and I've never seen any brand that didn't. Westell, Netopia, and Motorola all support PPP CHAP authentication.

When you plug a phone cable into your DSL modem, it automatically gets a sync to your local POP. Line noise, sync, DHCP, and PAP/CHAP authentication are taking place automatically, so all you need to do is go into the modem config page and input your account username and password.

EDIT: I should also say that the reason cable modem's don't always work is because the authentication methods for different levels of DOCSIS are different from provider to provider. Also, some cable ISP's only white-list the EMAC, CMAC, and MTA-MAC of the models they lease. That's where alot of the stigma of "is it compatible" comes from.
