Apparently my laptop is receiving strong signal, but can't renew my isp address. Does anyone have a solution? This must be a common occurrence. Any advice is deeply appreciated.

I'm running XP Pro on a Fujitsu n3520. Just bought it used. In McDonalds, it detected the wifi and offered to log in for a fee. Based on this, I'll assume the wireless on the laptop works.

    Thanks for reading this.

    BTW, my first post.

Highlight the Network Connection/Profile in your Networks window and then run the Repair utility on it (left hand column). It should reset the connection and adapter, and renew the IP address. Check the adapter properties as well to make sure your DHCP client is on (Device Manager, right click on the adapter, Properties)

Mickey D's charging for Wi-Fi access huh? Well THAT sucks. Just another reason not to eat inside there. Next they'll be charging for rug rats to use the playground...

So the wireless network that you are trying to connect is your own or an unsecured one?
If its yours then try resetting the router and if its an unsecured then you cannot do anything except wait for the owner to fix his router.

There is not enough info here....

As noted above...is this your router? If your scarfing Internet from your neighbor, he could have MAC filtering on, which would allow you to see and appear to start connecting without asking for security, but not grant an Ip address

Thanks for the responses. Yes, I'm trying to connect to my own router. My other computers seem to run just fine. I connected the laptop directly to the modem and got the same message. I also ran the repair utility to no avail.

I wish it was that simple. My ISP just gave me the number to Netgear, who were no help at all, not without an $85 support package.

Correction, I can log in with the network cable going directly to the modem.

Does this point to the router as the problem?

What have you got for your connection properties... IP address, DNS server, etc? Also, if all else seems in order, you could try resetting your IP Stack.

    Cheers...

Try manually seting up the DNS and IP adress in the TCP/IPv4. You will need to get the info from one of your other computers, so in the cmd window type ipconfig /all and get the info.
Than after getting the info go into where your network adapters are and click properties for the wifi one.

Looks like this and manually put the info in:

Well, changing routers seemed to do the trick! I'd like to thank all the fine folks who responded. Much appreciated and I'll be sure to "pay it forward".

Did you block your laptop's Mac address?

BTW, there's a "pay it forward thread" in the "buy and sell" sub forum.
