So i'm a wireless idiot when it comes to computers since i have never had a wireless internet connection, but with my soon to be purchase of a laptop for school work, i am in the market for a router.

Right now i'm running highspeed internet cable etc etc

Questions... what routers should i be looking at?

Since i have base base base knowledge of routers i was thinking of the apple airport extreme because through what i have been able to see about routers this seems like a SUPER easy one to install... but it is also much more expensive..

Is the apple airport extreme a good router? what could other more seasoned wireless people suggest ?

Thanks for all the help :D

Add your Laptop's specs to your Signature. Click the User CP link and type away.

Then people can better help you.

Ok, you're in the right section of the forum, but we still need to know what your computer is (at least brand/make/model) before we can say anything even remotely sensible (and even then, that might be a stretch :D ).

That does give some grist for the mill. :D Since you're considering Intel/Windows-based systems, I'm not sure if you need to go with an Apple-based router. In terms of what to look for, do you have any specific needs or uses you're contemplating that you want the router to be able to handle, for example, online gaming?

As a general matter, I would advise against the Belkin routers as I've had poor luck with them in the past, and that seems to be the general consensus on the forum. I just switched from a Belkin to a Netgear and am quite happy with the Netgear (other than for the noxious flashing blue lights which, thankfully, can be turned off).

I'm a Linksys fan myself. Their Easy setup adviser Software is a cakewalk and I highly recommend their products.

never thought it was so complex :( hence my lack of details lol...

Will be mostly doing research with online data bases and some gaming with my laptop. Router will be located in the main floor of the house and my laptop in the top floor so i can do my work in my room with my desk

Why i was thinking the apple is for the range i've heard it gets and the simple simple set up, from my previous posts it may be apparent that i dont know much about routers and their capabilities :(

I'll troll the forums and see what i can find to point me in the right direction :D thanks everyone, any advice / opinions on the apple extreme would be greatly appreciated

Well, it's not that complex - it's a little like the station attendant asking if your truck takes diesel or gasoline before he starts pumping stuff into your tank.

In terms of what you want to do - I assume that the house you'll be in is a standard light wood-frame construction, without things like concrete slab floors and whatnot, and that it's of reasonable proportions (i.e., like your basic suburbian house, not some bizarre McMansion) correct?

If that's the case, then based on what you want to do with the computer, almost any router is going to serve you just fine. My personal favorite right now is the Netgear dual band; others like the Linksys products - either one is going to be better by far than the Belkins, which you should probably stay away from because they seem to still have a lot of reliability issues.
