Hey I just got a new WRT54G2 wireless router to replace my old wired router. I followed the setup instructions and it does not work. My Vista pc say that it can not connect to the DNS servers. Here is some Info:

I have a "D-Link DCM-202" modem. I have two PC's that i want to conenct. Vista Home Pre SP2 and XP SP3. I brought the routers setup page via my XP pc. Here is some of that info:
    Internet IP Address: 192.168.1.10
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 0.0.0.0
    Static DNS 1: 68.87.64.146
    Static DNS 2:68.87.75.194

Is that info. on the Router?

Nevertheless, you need a Gateway Address....most likely it would be 192.168.1.1

And you should set the Internet IP on the Router to be Dynamically (Automatically) Assigned. It should get the Internet IP from the Modem.

Edit: And if you set the Router to Dynamically assign IP Addresses to LAN Devices, then you should make sure you set the Network Cards on your computers to Obtain IPs Automatically.

Right, i'm guessing you manually entered those numbers on the Network Adapter?

Either way I made some edits to my above post. Review it and try that.

Yeah, makaveli72 is correct. You need a gateway address. Without that your local machine (192.168.1.10) has no way to find the external DNS servers.

Is the router set up as a DHCP server? If so it ought to provide you with a local IP address as well as the proper gateway address. I wonder if you set a static IP address on the local machine during the router setup but didn't change it back to DHCP after the router was configured.

    See attached.

Your Router Settings should look similar to that. Your Gateway Address in the Network Setup section should be the IP Address/Default Gateway/Local DNS Address of your Modem. When you set the WAN Connection Type to Automatic; then save and apply those settings, when you go to the Status page of your Router you should see the Modem's IP Address; manually enter that IP in the Network Setup section as the Gateway.

Below the Network Setup Section if you have the LAN set to use DHCP (Automatically assign IP Addresses) [which you should for ease of use] then your PCs' network adapter card should also be configured to obtain IPs Automatically. Start--> Run and type ncpa.cpl and hit enter. Right click the network adapter and select Properties; Select Internet Protocol in the list and then clcik Properties....make sure the top and bottom options are both set to "Obtain IP Address Auto...")

Hey thanks a lot eveyone. I changed my routers settings via my xp computer so that is would automatically assign everything. MY router was not set to do that.
