I posted a thread before to ask for recommendation for a new router and thanks for all the feedback, I decided to get a WRT54GL; however, I am having some hesitation when it comes to the DD-WRT firmware installation. I watched 2 videos on the youtube and I read the wiki on the DD-WRT website. I understand that my router requires the flash version of the firmware. The problem is that the pinging of the router. From what I observe from the video, the step required is only installing the bin file from the zip file on the router, but the installation instruction on the wiki is much more complicated. I do not want to "brick" my router so I would like to ask if anyone can walk me through the installation with my new router. Thank you and sorry for the lengthy description. I thought it would be a good idea to explain myself clearly for any potential helper out there to understand my limited depth of knowledge and the problem I am having.

dd-wrt site has a how to section in their wiki section. I think they recommend installing the mini version first then the Full version as an update. You will like the dd-wrt firmware, gives you lots of features.

    1. Download the mini version.
    2. Login to 192.168.1.1 and navigate to the firmware upgrade tab.
    3. With a wired connection, initiate the firmware upgrade and wait. Do not unplug any cables, use the reset button, or try to access the router until the power light on the router switches on and stops flashing.
    4. Download the standard version.
    5. Within DD-WRT, upgrade to the standard version.

Remember to set up good security (enable WPA + change the login credentials). There's lots of cool settings like radio scheduling, operation mode, transmit power adjusting, etc.
