Well today I finally configured my very first wireless home network so I'm glad. My D-Link DIR-655 is doing nicely but now comes to the part where I have to play with both computers to share files. The thing is, I don't know what I'm doing.

I'm constantly browsing through Network folders on both my vista laptop and XP PC and for some reason can't access any shared folder or printer for that matter.

Some things I suspect may be holding me up:

    - stubborn Vista cannot locate/recognize XP...?
    - XP plug-ins missing? (I downloaded this TTLP thing, but still nothing helped)
    - Firewall-related problems? (I checked all options that allows file-sharing...)

Would like some assistance please. I have my network set up, but this file-sharing business is out of my league!

Are both of your computers on the same workgroup?

Okay, been going through some sites and enabling Norton to "trust" my XP PC worked...so the good thing is that I'm able to see all computers on my network on both computers but YET there's another problem.

I can access shared folders on both, but I can't modify anything. I think my settings on Vista are fine but not so sure on my XP.

I get this message on my Vista laptop:

*** is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out you have access permissions.

The specified network name is no longer available.

So there must be a few things I need to do before I can FINALLY share files. I'm itching to move a 60GB iTunes library to my laptop.

Easier said than done...I'm way too far on setting up my home network to just give up! No, I'm almost close...so close I can taste it.

Just for some reason I can't move any files from the shared folders to my Vista laptop.

i was there as well, i could see the network, but couldnt see the folders. then i could see the folders, but not the files, then after fiddling some more it was all gone again

i also couldnt get it to work with my xbox so i just gave up

xp is a few simple mouse clicks and vista really offered nothing over xp anyway

good luck, but i have a feeling if you get it to work it will work for a little while and then mysteriously stop working again :(

I have the same problem that j.l.rhapsody.

I have configured my Belkin Wireless G+MIMO Router. I have Vista on my laptop and XP on my PC. The Internet connection runs perfectly but I can't access any shared folder or printer.

Both computers are in the same group (CASA) and I don't know why I can't share files between them.

This is my first message in this web. Sorry for my English... :)

    Greetings from Spain!!

now that i think about it a little more i needed to install a "patch" on the xp machine because vista and xp use different protocols

if i can figure out what it is called i will post back

Hello all...since quite a few people share the same problem, I hope people continue to bear with us and help us get through this problem.

More good news is that I'm learning more and more as I continue to "troubleshoot". I may not know what I'm doing but I'm learning, so to speak.

Umm...okay, so I learned to map a network drive, everything seems perfect now but I STILL can't access a folder from my Vista laptop. I don't get it. Both firewalls were set up to allow file-sharing. I click on the shared folder from my laptop, loads for 3 minutes and says the same message.

Update: I did the PING test on both computers, and there was no problems whatsoever. WHAT is going on? Looking up permissions and ports next...I don't understand the ports.

I have configured my network correctly. Now I can send files between the PC and the Laptop, and I can print documents through the Network.

The problem is that I don't know what I do for that exactly. I was playing with the Firewall's options and then... it works perfectly...

If I can guess how I did it, I tell you. Promise. :p

You should have added a FW rule that allows traffic from your local network (subnet). You may need to do this on any pc that needs to share files.

This is a very common problem that novice do not get or under stand there settings on their person FW.

    ^That's great news for you.

I hope it had nothing to do with enabling ports or whatever...that stuff I do not get.

Wow this is really frustrating. Someone please direct me to a solution to this problem!

I tried Windows Easy Transfer and everything went smoothly until it came to the point of actual transfer...no progress was ever made. I even disabled both firewalls to see if that would help.

So if I can't file-share, can't do easy transfer, etc. then what can I do...spend $100+ on a external hard drive? My goodness...

    A couple of thoughts....

Are you use MS Login when your turn your PC's on? This is recommended for attaching network shares.

Second.. Do you have the same user ID & PS on both pc's?

I dont have any passwords set at all and my xp has three user accounts each but the vista laptop has only a single user account. Again with no password, and the user Ids are the same.
