Ok, so I`m a total beginner at setting up permissions, control and stuff for routers,so bare with me.
I have a cable connection, through the modem(2.4mbps I think) and that is linked to a crappy router.(the name is erased from it,but I think I should be able to get more info on it if required).
So there's 4 open ports and all of them are connected to computers.
I`d like to make a single computer get priority over the others(like 50% of the available bandwidth ONLY when needed) and open up some ports, since for some reason it appears I have a lot of ports closed(bitcomet reports it so).
I`ve tried 192.168.0.1 and .1.1 and I can`t get in the config area. I`m connected in the #1st open port(they`re numbered 1 to 4) .
So how do I go about it?
Using XP SP2, it`s not a wireless router(yet, will get one soon).
-
a picture of it would help us get the maker and model number
-
You need to setup QoS, but first you need to get into your router, which you are unsuccessful now. The 192.168.(0 or 1).1 are the most used, perhaps you need to make an extra effort and see who is the manufacturer of the router you bought from a garage sale
-
-
If u don't know the local IP for the router to access its config. page u can always click on the Network Icon in the task tray, under support to find out the IP Gateway address. This is of course with the ethernet cable connected to the computer via port 1 and another cable from the Internet port of the router to the Modem.
-
Ok,I`m off to work now, but I`ll do everything I can afterwards. It's black and dirty
-
I think eleron is after something dirty
-
Start -> Run -> cmd -> ipconfig
Find out the "Default Gateway", that's your router's IP address.
Once you're in, let me know what else you need to know.
Let us know the router model would help us a lot for giving you the right instructions.
-
Ok, I got another router, the other one died yesterday too.
Thing is, this one don`t have wireless either.
Oh well.
It`s a Speedstream, apparently just like the last one.Attached Files:

Default SpeedStream router address is: 192.168.254.254
http://www2.windstream.net/downloads/links/SpeedStream211.pdf
eleron, I'm not sure if your particular model supports QoS, the ones in the manual above don't. -
-
Work.
So can I do it? can I open up some ports and make the 1st plugged computer(slot 1) to have priority over the others? -
Did you verify if it has the QoS option?
-
Check your router configuration and see if there is any option for QoS. -
There is none, just a tab with "devices" and an option to reboot it, or customize the color pallete.
Could I at least open some ports? it`s driving me insane, can`t play anything on the net. -
Well, the game's instruction should tell you which port to use, doesn't it?
-
Then Main Menu -> Setup -> Port Forwarding
Under Add/Edit Entry:
Choose the Service or Protocol, then enter port number, then enter the IP address of the computer, and click Apply.
You can always use the DMZ mode option if you don't want to do all these port forwarding stuff, DMZ basically put one of the computers on your local network to be visible outside of the firewall. Mind you the computer running in DMZ mode is basically like running without a router, so make sure you have other software firewall enabled in your PC.
Personally I'd recommend using port forwarding over DMZ, but I know some people prefer DMZ for gaming. -
DMZ is too risky, your network is completely opened, no protection at all
-
-
When you open a port, it becomes a tunnel, the firewall would not see anything.
-
-
It's possible, I'll double check what I'm saying
-
There ain`t any option like the ones you mentioned...Attached Files:

What is it in gateway health?
-
Statistics and Reboot.
-
If none of the menus allows you to open ports nor DMZ then there is nothing you can do. Then you might as well just to connect directly with the modem.
-
I can`t. There`s at least 6 computers that need the same connection.
So is there NO WAY to open up specific ports, say 11111 or 20000 ? it`s driving me nuts also in Bitcomet,it severely reduces my dwl speed. -
The only way I know is getting in the router and select the port and associate that port with a service or game, but you can't even access your router. May be you want to update the firmware of the router so you can get a better configuration user interface with the required options.
Sorry if I ask the question again or if you already answered, what is the router model? -
A crappy Speed Stream.
I thought I could do it somehow differently, through a program or something.
Oh well.
I have to go to work, i`ll see if I can figure something out tonight.
Thanks anyway. -
Nope, you must access the router's configuration or settings menu.
-
Man, what da heck is this? Strange router interface, not the same at all as the manual I found.
Ok, what do you see if you click on " Devices" on the top right corner?
Also, can you tell me the exact model name or number of this router? Look under the router, there should be a sticker. -
eleron,
stick w/ one helper or the other or they'll have you chasing your tail.... -
What's wrong with chasing tails???
-
I`ll have to figure things out tomorrow, just got back from work and I`m worn up.
Thanks for all your help guys. -
No problem, it looks like you have a tail?????
-
-
eleron, seriously, it's really hard to help you if you don't give us the model, it's like asking how to configure your mobile phone without the model.
-
I second stewiegriffin, we can't even suggest a firmware update without the model.
-
-
Ok,more pics of it.

Here, step-by-step port forwarding guide for your router with pics, just pick the apps/games on the list:
http://portforward.com/english/rout...ns/Speedstream-6520/Speedstream-6520index.htm
Also, the previous login you did, it's not admin login, you must login as admin to your router in order to see all those settings. -
And for the record, the 6520 doesn't support QoS prioritisation:
http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/bc/hardware/?action=h_view&model_id=279 -
Click on start, click on run, type in cmd , then click OK, type ipconfig and
write down the gateway address 192.xxx.xxx.xxx
Open IE/FF and enter the gateway address, this will load a configuration webpage, in the upper right corner of this page it will say login or logout, if it says login then click on the go button on the webpage not on the browser and enter admin for the password or whatever it might be. Once you are logged into the modem click on home networking then advanced settings then configure speedstream wireless gateway network. -

*EDITED*
Sorry Wirelessman. -
I was still writing when you posted, I just posted after you without knowing that you were also posting, I will remove that portion.
-
I will try that tonight, have to get to work now.
I did not post pics of it because as I said, this one replaced the older one with nothing on it. -
eleron, so did you get it to work?
-
-
Help me setup my router :p
