Need some help in setting up a network printer.

    Current set up:
    1. DLink DI-524 router
    2. 3 laptops wirelessly connected
    - ibook G4 on Mac 10.3.9
    - Fujitsu Tablet PC on XP Pro SP2(Tablet Edition)
    - HP NC6400 on XP Pro SP2
    3. HP dv9207us on Vista Home Premium connected via ethernet cable
    4. Canon ip1500 printer which is connected to the ibook

Is there a way to set up the network to enable printing to the ip1500 connected to the ibook from the other laptops in the network?

    Thanks in advance.

    Yes. It's actually quite easy.

On one of your PCs download Angry IP scanner. Then do a scan of 192.168.1.000 to 192.168.1.254 and click on your Mac when you've found it.

Next go onto Open Computer (at the top I think) and go on in Explorer. You should then be able to see a printer. Right click the printer and click install. That printer should now appear in your printer list and you should be able to print of it I think. I worked for me with my Cannon iP1700.

If you need any help please email me. My address is in my sig.

Is the ibook set up to share the printer with other computers on the network?

If so, then the Windows computers can search for network shared printers. However, I'm not sure whether they will need the printer (ie the ibook) to be on a fixed IP address rather than the router dynamically issuing IP addresses. Using a networked printer server or a router with a printer port is a better solution.

Thanks for the replies mattireland and John Ratsey.

I went with an Ethernet USB Print Server - a DLink DP-301U since my wifi router is also a DLink...

Although I haven't installed/set it up yet. Currently out of the country...

I'm assuming this should be fairly easy to set up right? Do I need to install the printer's driver to all the laptops?

I hope using lappys with 3 different operating systems will not be an issue...

Canon printers are notorious for not working properly with print servers. Also, you will not have bi-directional connectivity with that server, which means your printer status monitor won't report ink levels, etc. The only server I've found that has bi-directional capability is the Kepspan USB Server - it's a USB server and not a printer server, which allows you to share up to four USB devices between an unlimited number of PCs. I use it to share my USB scanner and iP4000 printer. Install the server software on each PC, then connect to the device and run the device installer. They recently released a software update that fixed the wireless issues.

With most printer servers, you have to connect the printer to the PC, run the installer, and then connect the printer to the print server.

Just installed the DP-301U print server. Configured it using one of our xp pro equipped laptop. Setting it up initially was not that hard. No problem as well getting the vista equipped machine to print over the network.

Now for the hard part...I can't get the iBook (with Tiger 10.4.10) to print over the network. Been at it for the past 2 hours with no success. Hope you guys can help out as I'm really at a loss on how to get this thing to work...

    Thanks in advance.
