Hello, I am just renting a house for the first time and need internet. my area (Tacoma WA) has both Qwest and Comcast.

For the summer all i need is the standard connection for 2 people, but when school starts i will need good internet for 6 computers.

note also that only 1 bedroom and the living room have cable wired, the other 5 bedrooms do not.

any thoughts? do's or don'ts? advice on which provider to use.

    advice is much appreciated.

my knowledge of jargon is very low.

Depending on usage you need to find if either one has limits. I know comcast blocks certain ports. So web servers are out on residential service. If you need uplink speed you need to check. The Comcast service I had several years ago had a pretty low uplink speed. I'm currently on Verizon FIOS.

I would say Comcast, and I would setup a modem and a router with wireless capabilities, this way everyone can connect to internet.

Netgear is a good router :)

The modem will be provided by Comcast so no need to get one, the router I like is Netgear, they have a variety depending how much you want to spend.

Yeah, the modem will come from your provider.

For the router, my suggestion is to look over the reviews on newegg and concentrate on a few routers that have 4/5 egg reviews, then pick up one of those...whichever seems in your price range. DLink, Linksys, Netgear...they all have good routers in their lineup. But maybe a few stinkers too. That's where the Newegg reviews can help guide you.

For the record, I use a DLink DIR-655. It's solid.

I would go with cable and a wireless router combo. I have a Linksys WRT54G but I would get a WRT54GL if I were to get another router.
