    Question......

I run a wireless M1330 and want to run a net cable from that to a desktop someone wants me to look at.

Although I am very fluent at alot of things...I am not at this...

Lobster, steak, beer and reps for anyone who can walk me through this by putting something together for me.

Oh...I use Vista 64Bit and the computer uses XP..although all I want is to get the internet working on a thoroughput.

    define "look at"

be able to be seen as in sharing?

physically be able to see ones desktop?

look at to troubleshoot their computer while having issues?

    spying?

    Yes...Internet connection sharing.

My laptop is a M1330 with Wifi. A friend has asked me to fix his desktop computer and has dropped it off in my room, 3 floors above the hard wire capabilities of my router.

Can I run a ethernet connection somehow from my wireless laptop to this desktop and have the internet work???

    Sorry if I was vague.

A few ways I can think of as is an ad doc setup, but with this you'll need both to have wireless cards. And network connection wizard or right click your wireless connection>properties>advanced> Internet connection sharing>click allow network users to connect>settings. If you need more info click learn more about ICS. Hope that I was able to help in someway.

USB to wireless adapters are as cheap as the 3' cat5 jumper. But Internet connection sharing should be your ticket. First enable ICS using your wireless as the WAN port and your ethernet port as your network. Then you will need a cat 5 jumper (not sure if passthru or x-over) to the 2nd computer.

I have to ask something to make this pass my reasonableness test...Just how long a cable are you planning on running? I mean, really, couldn't you just look at it???

Your local BB/CC should have a crossover cable, price unknown. But you can easily get a USB wireless adapter for a few ยข more. Personally, other than its great to know how to use ICS, I would go the usb wireless route. Buy the part see if it suits your needs. Once done you will have a backup or most stores are very lax on return policies, GL

well im reading now that vista may have some ICS issues anyway.....so maybe the USB wireless is your best option

After you bridge your wireless connection with your wired networking device on the laptop, you would then be able to use the crossover cable to connect to both WIRED NETWORK ports on your laptop and the desktop which would then allow your laptop to act like a router allowing the desktop to send and receive packets

Im gonna believe by all the help that I cant turn on ICS and just connect ethernet from my laptop to my desktop.

What if I used a usb to hotwire though or even USB to serial on the desktop? Would this be difficult?

Ya Im cheap!!! See what I paid for this system?

a crossover cat5 has 4 wires that actually cross over each other. This is very different than passthru.
I read your review and I am soo jealous of your drive. And your laptop too.
I can tell you are very proud of your computer and the deal you got.
I also read your article on vista tweaking. The only one I had to do was the tunexp. I used it several years ago and forgot about it. I already used the other ones.

Thats pretty much the dumbest...I ran into that with my free to air and the ...I believe it was a R32 serial to usb to my laptop...one wire crossed.

And tx....I will be adding tweaks daily. trowing a great freware program in there tomorrow.

Oh and.....WHY COULDNT SOMEBODY JUST MAKE THINGS SIMPLE SO I COULD RUN A REGULAR INTERNET CABLE FROM MY LAPTOP TO THE DESKTOP AND ALLOW THOROUGHPUT??? IS THAT SO HARD??? ARGHHH!

if you have a spare hub/router laying around the upink port has a built in xover then you just need 2 regular enet cables

I have a spare router sitting in my drawer...How would I do this?? Its a Netgear MIMO with the seven built in antennas one...cant remember the number but its still touted as being one of the best.

My cheap 20 buck trednet runs much better for distance.

setup ICS on your laptop, using your wireless as your wan side, use your eport as your network side. Run a cat cable from your eport to the uplink in the router and another cat5 from the router to desktop. You should be able to use default settings in your router. the desktop should have no problem surfing.
I wish I could guide you through the ICS but I have never used it in Vista. I did disable the service though thinking I would never use it, Gooogle should have some valueable info

Repped you for the effort as well as grateful. Thank you both. I will work on it tomorrow.

Its too bad a wireless router couldnt be set up to receive the signal of my other wireless where I could then just run the internet cable from there to the desktop.

Ok so... I hooked up my wpn824 v.2 Netgear rangemax and went into admin.

I disabled dhcp and give it the new 192.168.0.99 in order to set it up as an access point and saved all settings.

I went into dos, released and renewed the IP.

I then went back and turned off RIP.

Figured it would then allow me to use the router as an access point like it described...

    Nothing...

    Heres the link:

    http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/N101236.asp

    Any thoughts???

K...you found my 'Achilles Heal' Reezin14; no need to rub the salt in but Im digging deep with the help of all here now.

Im trying to enable my Netgear Rangemax as an Access Point and have followed the above with no luck. Any advise? Did I do something wrong?

UPDATE AGAIN... So i tried the other route and tried to set up ICS. There are simple Vista instructions through Microsoft. I ran into one problem though. Where i was supposed to right click on the connections, click sharing and then enable ICS...its not available in wireless connections. This now poses another problem.

Gonna try adhoc next as apparently, the internet runs through...any thoughts?

ICS wont work through a wireless connection. See its been real long since I used it (thinks back to early XP Days). Maybe wireless be your only option.

Finally gave up and figured it out...Told the guy he had to buy me two 50ft internet cables (I already had the connector). Tx anyway.

There should be an easy way for me to use this netgear as an Access Point however. It describes how...just doesnt work

No you werent; it was actually pretty comical. If you would believe it I have instructed systems and applications at the college, private and industry level. I have an immense amount of background..self taught, experienced and through schooling yet I dont know this...

    Its rather funny.

Repped ya in any case for the help...just something I need to learn because I believe I should just be able to take a net cable from mine to another and allow internet thoroughput without difficulty.
