Hi. I have a Linksys WRT54GS router and a Motorola SB4100 Cable Modem. I'm trying to set up a network so that all of my computers can connect to the internet.

If I connect the SB4100 modem directly to a single PC, the internet is working fine. But if I will connect the SB4100 modem to the Internet port of the router and after cloning the MAC address of the LAN adapter of my PC to the router, i do not get internet connection at all.

the weird thing is that the router status have all i need to connect to the internet. i get the domain name of my isp, my ip address on the internet (not the 192.168.xxx.xxx), a default gateway and 2 DNSs. they are the same informationi get when i connect directly from modem to PC that runs smoothly. on my computer, i get the usual 192.168.xxx.xxx from the router, the default gateway ip address of the router, etc. it seems that everything is fine.

am i missing something? please suggest all the necessary steps to solve this problem bec. i beginning to explode just figuring this one out. Thank you very much in advance.

Can you ping 192.168.1.1? If so, then the problem isn't the connection from your computer to your modem, it's from your modem to the outside world, in which case you need to call your ISP and have them help you figure it out.

You will need to clone the MAC address of your PC into the router. This is found in the WAN setup. Most all ISP tie the account name to a MAC address of the PC used to setup the account. When you connect the router in the loop is sees the MAC address of the WAN port on the router. So you need to spoof the MAC Address.

he already did that, apparently... ;)

anyway, I would follow Pita's suggestion. if you don't know how to ping the address, press the Windows Key + R to bring up the run dialog, type "cmd" and hit enter, this will bring up the command prompt. Type into there "ping 192.168.1.1" and see if you get reponses or "response timed out" messages. If they time out, it's probably something on your end, if not, it's between the modem and the ISP.

i can ping 192.168.1.1. i think the problem is from my router to my PC. The internet connection is working fine if I will connect the modem directly to my PC but does not if I will use the router to my PC. The ROUTER STATUS also gives me the the name of my isp, and the my ip address on the outside world. it usually gives me something like 210..xxx.xxx.xxx.

yes, i already cloned the mac address of my pc to the wireless router. if i did not clone it, the ROUTER STATUS does not give me the name of my ISP, the ip address to the internet, and dns. But if i will clone the address of my pc to the router, the ROUTER STATUS gives me all I need. The ISP name is present, ip address to the internet is present (210.xxx.xxx.xxx), and DNS but No internet. The weird thing is that even though it gives me those information, I still can't ping the name of my ISP and the two DNS provided.

I really do not know what is going on.

the problem is already resolved. it turns out that the problem is the modem not communicating to the router properly. so i went to my ISP and have them change my modem. then after setting my home network again, all is working good. anyway, thanks for all your suggestions.
