Hey all, I'm a long time lurker in these forums, and let me just say that all of your insight and tips have been very informative to say the least, and I'm grateful for such a good support base in this website.

I just recently bought a 5720, and am loving every minute of it. However, if there is one problem that is quite persistent is the network's occasional low signal strength. Every 2 minutes or so, the connection strength plummets from around 50Mps to 1 or 2Mps. When playing games such as Battlefield 2, the drop in signal strength completely prevents me from having smooth gameplay.

I've tried downloading and installing new drivers for the network card, but for some reason an error message pops out saying that the "Installer does not support installation on this computer." The only driver I have is the one that come with the laptop in the drivers and utilities CD.

I remember reading a thread about 2 months ago from this forum, giving instructions on improving the network capabilities of the NP5720. I've tried searching for that post for many hours to of no avail. Is there a way I can improve my connection? Right now, I use the laptop in my basement with the router upstairs. I also have a desktop in the same room with the laptop, and have no connection problems whatsoever. It's only the 5720 that's giving me problems. Please, help!

    Thanks in advance.

Was the laptop on battery or AC? I've heard that if you disable the infared port on the 5720, you'll get better signal for bluetooth and less statics output from the speaker but i'm not sure if that will improve your wireless signal. Since you are in the basement, the laptop is probably just not picking up the signal very well. Laptop has an antena for the wireless inside the laptop while desktop one usually sticks out (which is why it gets better signal). You can try to download and run "Netstumbler" on both machine and see the difference. Occasional drop in signal strenght can be cause from cordless phone, microwave, and other electronic appliances.

or you can buy a repeater to boost the signal. and place somewhere near your laptop in the basement.

another thing would be obstacle like wall, blocked room. maybe your laptop was blocked whereas your desktop wasnt?

you can also consider using 802.11a which uses different unlicensed radio band of 5 ghz as opposed to 2.4. and in most cases very rare common appliances use this spectrum. so interference wouldnt be an issue. but one issue would be compatibility.

use device manager (devmgmt.msc) to update the driver. but instead of asking windows to do all the tasks automatically, it would be better if you add the driver manually from your hard disk or other media. often it will solve the driver installation problem. also you can scan the computer for new hardware changes within device manager so you use the most up to date driver.

    hope that help.

have u tried ONSPEED? its an internet accelerator which is compatible with most OS, can be used for both MAC n PC too. Sits quietly in your pc/laptop, and flexible enough for you to turn it on or off. speed tests have shown that ONSPEED increases dial-up speed to 10 times. although i am on broadband, i have it installed in my laptop too. yes, broadband is fast, but i want to be faster :D
