I have a sony vaio FZ190 notebook. The FZ comes with a wireless network adapter that is ABGN.

I just bought a d-link dir655 wireless N router and I can only seem to connect at 54-mbps (displayed in the wireless connection status). The router is set to mixed mode (n, g, and b).

    Any thoughts?

Don't connect anything else to the Router except for your laptop and see if it connects at N speeds. When a N router is running in mixed mode and another device is running with G wireless, it may just do wireless G for all devices connected to it. Also, wireless N speeds are fairly short ranged.

The only 2 devices that are connect to the router right now is the vaio laptop (wireless) and a desktop (wired ethernet). My laptop is sitting about 2 feet from the router.

I tried to output n only mode on the router but the vaio notebook does not connect to it. It only connects when I output mixed (n, g, b) or g and b only with 54 mbps connection speed.

have you checked actual speeds transferring files from laptop->desktop ?
the reason im asking is cause vista have an issue with 802.11n speed displayed :
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935279

I have the same problem ever since vista is out , im getting terrible speeds (25mbps - yea bit per sec) , so this article doesn't really help me , but maybe your actual speeds are way higher.. please tell us your speeds after you check.

You could just try to transfer files between the two computer (desktop and notebook) to get a real-world figure.

well you don't need any special software , start taskmgr by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del , goto network and there you can see the graphs where 100% is the network max connection (i.e 54mbps) , transfer a large file over lan and take a look at the graph , if for example it's around 50% than your transfer speeds are 27mbps , also count the time it takes to move the file , use a calculator to check mb/s.

sorry for the late post , I was on vacation

Ok, I have some more info. When I disable encryption (wpa) I am able to connect at 130mbps. However, if encryption enabled I'm only able to connect at 54 mbps. Is there any way to ressolve this problem? I really don't want to have an open network.

I check my transfer rate is about 1.4-1.9 MB/sec with encryption and 5.1-5.6MB/sec without encryption.

Draft 11n, which achieves its best secured speeds with WPA2, and falls back to 802.11g speeds when WEP is used.

How about wpa instead of wpa2? I'm not using wep as it does not allow n speed.

I am talking about my local area network and not the internet connection through my ISP.
