Laptop is an ASUS G72GX. Had an issue last night where the wireless router went goofy and nothing could connect to it. reset the router (linksys wrt160n v2) and everything worked fine. EXCEPT my laptop. Now it says it wont connect wirelessly. i can connect hard lined though. It says my wireless adapter needs to be turned on and troubleshooting says to turn the switch thats on the side of the laptop to the ON position. except it IS in the ON position. I tried updating the driver and nothing happened. i tried disable/enable and got nothing. i even check the registry to see if some 3rd party stuff is causing it to not load. nothing. anything else i may be forgetting?

Delete the wireless connection (where Windows stores SSID and password for every network) and create it from scratch.
It's in control panel/networks/ manage wireless connection

If you reset your router, you flushed its wireless security settings, yes? So you may need to re-enter router wireless security settings to match those on your laptop... or re-enter at both ends.

I will try it when i get home, thxs. i think all i have done is deleted the wireless networks, but not the LAN. which come to think of it.. it DOES show the old routers name even though i have moved and its a new router. wonder if that is holding it up.

Yes, I did a hard reset (had to twice actually cause i forgot the password i put on it after the 1st reset). The wierd thing is, the other desktop, laptop, cell phones and ipad ALL connect to the wireless router just fine.

Is it an "issue" that the LED/light that should show the wireless icon being ON (thats next to the power button) isnt on? or is that part of the wireless adaptor not working? the switch IS in the on poisition.. but the light isnt on. I even tried the FN + F3 button and that didnt work. never does imo. i have tried everything i can think of (besides redoing the router again as stated above) short of taking the laptop apart and making sure the soder (SP?) didnt come off the board or something.

I assume there are other wireless networks in your vicinity- does your laptop detect any networks at all?

The laptop wont show ANY other wireless points. the other devices (desktop, cells, ect) show other wireless points though. When I right click and try to find other connections, it will only want to get the LAN connections, and of course, when its not connected, it finds nothing.

Does the notebook use any software to control dedicated hardware buttons (volume up/down, app launchers, Wi-Fi switch etc.)?
Apart from re-installing wireless drivers- you already did that- you may try re-installing utility software provided by Asus. Some buttons need an app to work, others don't- that depends on a manufacturer.
In your case the main issue is that the card is wither disabled or dead- the former seems more likely, however if you have a card that you could test it's worth a try (maybe from another notebook in your household?)

none that I know of (besides the function / F* keys). the only "program" i have thats close is that asus overclock thing.

I wish i could try another card.. it figures to cause i have a toshiba laptop that died on me and i junked it. wish i kept that wireless card now! haha. I will check the utility drivers/cd when i get home as well. thanks

Does Device Manager list your wireless adapter as 'healthy'... with the driver you tried to install? Could try re-inserting the adapter... or maybe it has died if not active and current in Device Manager.

    small update:

basically problem is still not fixed. I uninstalled the Wlan and reg LAN drivers, restarted, and used the ASUS utility driver cd to install all new drivers. I checked the BIOS and it is still showed enabled.

BUT, now 2 new things happen.

    1. When the laptop reboots, the blue light/wireless icon shows ON. then it goes away right before im asked to log in.

    2. When i log in and get to the desktop screen.. if i turn the wireless switch on the outside of the laptop off, it shows an icon on the screen with no wireless. when i switch it back to the ON position, the icon shows as if i should have wireless again (but i dont). diagnostic still shows wireless capability turned off.

Is the wireless adapter 'healthy' in Device Manager?

Yes, it does show its fine.

I tried another route last night as well. did a system restore to a week ago and nothing worked still. so i did 1 from 3 weeks ago, still nothing worked. So now im convinced the card is either broken or something majorly screwy is in my bios.

I'd be inclined to get a little hardware radical before calling in a replacement. Uninstall it in DM, shut down, pull the card, reboot, assess system response... look in DM to see the card NOT there, shut down, install the card, reboot, look in DM to see the card... install the latest driver. See what you get.

I actually did that a few days ago when i took the laptop semi apart (so i could access the wifi card/plug. uninstalled in DM, rebooted, shut down, plugged back in, and fired it up. it installed drivers like normal with the "found hardware" ... but still no connection. *boy i wish i had grabbed or kept my old toshiba laptop for spare parts... i feel dumber now :/

1 thing i just thought of before i came to work was i have 1 of those USB wireless adaptors I want to try. Didnt think about it earlier cause i just moved and most of my stuff is still in boxes. If that works then i will prob say screw it and keep the usb adaptor in. I dont use the laptop for gaming. mostly just internet/pay bills type stuff. just 1000 times more convinet to pay them using the laptop where ever i am sitting vs going to the office and taking all the paperwork with mr.

    *side note

Ever since the system restore, now when i do the Fn + F2 key, i get the wifi icon on the screen. i never got that before. but still doesnt work.

I guess the final "update" for this issue.

Short of doing a fresh install of windows again, i just gave up on fixing the driver issue. my g/f had 1 of those wireless USB's and let me use that. did a speedtest and im getting low 30 ping and constant 22-24 mb.... so im happy. maybe 1 day ill came back to fix the issue.

thank you all for your help.

    Here is a final update...

I wish i knew what i did.. but the wireless on my laptop works again. idk how.. but it does. every now and again i have to manually do the Fn + f2 key to turn it on, but it works. i had to reset my whole network cause it got screwed up somehow. and when i did, the little light was on.
