To give foreground, I worked for Comcast cable, and as a computer tech. So the basic's are out of the way, ive been troubleshooting this for a while now.

Ok, WRT-54GS Linksys is my wireless router.

My laptop is an Asus G51JX2.

The issue started around 5 days ago or so. Its as if im on dial up/dsl. Speedtest.net gives a consistent 2meg down 1 meg up from Atlanta (true docsis 3 server).

But games are high ping rate. And here and there it drops off.

I am unsure if I have bad settings or something causing this. I hear people all the time saying out of the box settings suck.

I am not one to mod a router just yet so it has stock profile, and is secured.

Any tips for trying to make this a smoother connection.

Oh, I am about 50-60 feet from the router. But as I said, just started about 5 days ago, been working fine for the past month-ish

If it was working, then I would suspect a failure somewhere. You can move equipment around to see if anything improves. Is it cable broadband? You had severe weather recently, yes... could it be trouble outside... damaged or wet cabling?

Or perhaps new wireless interference? Do you have the same trouble when wired?

May want to do a survey of what's in your area. You may have another wireless (AP) using the same channel as yours. Causing the interference.

gaming on wireless is always chancy....

Is your gaming really affected or just your 'ping rates'??

What happens when you go wired first of all to the router and then directly into your cable box?

You do know that 'ping rates' are very transitory and not really effective in troubleshooting potential problems on a network that does a lot of traffic shaping (like Comcast).

From my experience, the router may be overheating. My router (also WRT54GS) drops my connections unexpectedly and has been unresponsive sometimes.

I took the the PING test, why can't it measure the packet loss?

pings, along with a lot of other udp traffic, are often blocked and/or spoofed by an ISP. If not yours then any of the intermediate carriers.

Ping and traceroute are getting to be pretty worthless these days.
