I have a TrendNet wireless firewall router. Do I need a software firewall as well? Will they conflict with each other? What about if I take the laptop out and use unsecured wifi?

If I do need software, suggestions for the best free and simple to use program?

I suggest if your going to be using the internet outside of your home that you get a software firewall installed. And as far as them conflicting with each other I haven't had any problems between router FW and notebook FW.Zone Alarm is one of my favorites monitors traffic coming and going and its FREE. ;)
