Whenever my laptop lid is shut for an extended period of time the wireless card shuts off and I lose my internet connection. Apparently one of the reasons was solved by another forum member:

go to the devise manager and open it, find your network card, expand it, right click on it, go to properties and uncheck the box "allow the computer to turn off".....

I have since done that and it still shuts off. I need to figure out how to fix this and I've searched through the power settings a bunch but I think I am missing the area that can fix it. Help!

How long is "an extended period of time"? Does you laptop hibernate/sleep, or does the wireless just shut off?

It goes to sleep after an hour and may hibernate but I don't know. I can't figure out where the hibernate controls are, I don't see them in the control panel power management section.

If the laptop goes to sleep, of course you will lose connectivity. Go to your control panel, switch to classic view, and double click the power options icon.

I never lost connectivity when my Dell desktop went to sleep, why is it happening now?

Did you let MS install any updates ??????

More than likely MS did a security patch that has changed a setting in the OS. There have been reports of PC that came out of sleep or hybernation could be compromised. So my guess is MS attempted to fix a problem.

Yeah that's definitely possible, I have done at least one update. Any idea on how to reverse whatever it might have done? There must be a way to have my internet stay on when the computer is sleeping. Think about how many reasons there are for people to need a continuous connection even while not at the comp...

Just a guess - because the laptop power settings say to sleep when the lid is closed.

No, there is no way to continue to have connectivity while sleeping. Do you understand what happens to the computer while in sleep mode (aka standby mode)?

If a computer needs internet connectivity, it stays powered up. If you want to conserve power, you turn off the monitor/power down the laptop lcd.
