Depends on what all you want to do.
    Do you want:
Wireless access to computer and internet
    Access to internet period
    Ability to expand
If you want to be able to expand or communicate with other computers--- How many?

    Also good to know
what type of internet access do you currently have
do both devices have NIC cards?
    does laptop have wireless?

I would think the "best" solution would be to get a wireless router and a NIC for your desktop. You can share your ADSL connection via the router. Your desktop can connect to the wireless router via a hardwire connection (RJ45 - CAT5 Cable) and your laptop can connect to the workgroup via the wireless.

Things to make sure of when setting up network. If you live near neighbors, you will want to set encryption on the wireless.

Also, Make sure all computers you want to interconnect are on the same workgroup and subnet (Router will assign IP Address via DHCP)

For beginning users to wireless i recomend the Linksys WRT54G Router, I have found that most people find it easy to set-up and it works very well.

Now for the cheaper option: You can get a cheap Ethernet hub or swith and connect them both via a CAT5 cable to the switch or hub. Again make sure that the workgroup and subnet are the same for them to connect. You could even still share the internet connection, but your laptop will have to be connected via a cable not wireless.

NOTE: If you want to share data between the computers, you will want to enable File/Printer sharing.

    Chrispz,

If you just want to be able to share files between 2 systems and both have ethernet cards, just connect a cross-over cable and you should be set. This will probably cost you only a few bucks to get the cable. A few minor changes to your network settings and it should be ok.

The Cross-over cable is kinda limited and has disadvantages. But, if all you want to do is share a file or something, it would work...but so would a USB Flash drive.

Maybe I was reading more into the "and so on".
