I'm trying to do work for my employer's website by testing everything before I set up everything on a real server. I have the website working and can look at it when I go the to local address of 192.168.1.108:81. But, there are links that still point to the currently live website, and that won't actually help me determine if things work on the local location. I know generally you'd use the HOSTS file to have any instances of a web address point to a specific IP address, but when I try to do the same with the IP address above, it still doesn't seem to work. Does HOSTS allow the local IP addresses to be used for web addresses? Or will it only work on WAN IP addresses?

Wait, nevermind! I managed to fix a problem that was preventing me from using the WAN IP, but now that I fixed it I can actually use the WAN IP in HOSTS to do what I need to.

the way hosts works is it sort of acts like a DNS server for your local machine.

it should work for any ip address, although i don't know why you're using port 81.
