I just got a Linksys wireless router for x-mas and just installed it and I have a few questions.

Will Mcaffe still protect me from virus's still even though now i'm wireless will Mcaffe configure it self to the wireless connection and still protect me?

Security is a very big thing for me. Changing from wired to wireless is just as safe as a wired connection right?

I set the router security setting to high and I have mcafee and windows firewall is this enough protection so that none of my passwords will get hacked for stolen?

I'm useing the latest version of firefox as well.

Again what I'm basically asking is that my wireless connection is secure correct? I do some online shopping and I want nothing to happen

Is there anything else I can do to maximize my protection?

    again thanks!

Yes to all your questions. From my experience. The only difference from wireless and direct connect is that direct connect is much more stronger. Firefox was a good choice, they tend to be on the safe side with firewalls. Mcafee will still protect you wired or wireless. There are alot of things you can download online to protect your PC. Avast, Comodo and a bunch of others. Search the forum for free software to protect your computer. But also remember that you can only protect your computer so much. Some things are just out of our hands.

    happy holidays.

Looks like you have done some wise things already by having the latest version of your browser, firewall, and Virus protection software. Here a are more things you can consider...

1.) Change the default SSID of your Wifi network immediately, if you haven't done so already. The manufacturers usually use their name as the SSID when you first turn on the router. Make sure to change it to some random SSID with numbers and letters(not sure if special characters are allowed, you can try) that you remember.

2.) You can choose to not broadcast your SSID name. It looks like some people like this and others don't. Your choice if you want to not broadcast. I personally like not broadcasting. What this does is that when people can for Wifi networks that they can attach to, your network won't be on the list. Cafe's, Starbucks etc broadcast theirs creating a Wifi hotspot since they want all their customers to connect to it. Certain systems have trouble with Wifi networks that don't broadcast, but I have not problem with my setup.

3.) This above all else, make sure to turn on your encryption to secure your network so others can't get in. Use WPA2 and set a long password.

4.) You might want to turn on MAC address filtering as well. Some people like this others don't. I personally like this as well. What this does is that it allows only specific machines(that you specify) to get on to your network. You can use this in conjunction with WPA2 encryption.

5.) I think your Virus scan should not be affected with you going wired or wireless, since it should scan the files on your machine, not the network connection.

6.) I still think a wired connection is more secure than a wifi connection, but by taking some of the safety measures mentioned above, you should be able to be pretty safe I would think. Though nothing is perfect or unbreakable.

7.) Oh, yeah. Don't log onto any wifi networks you don't know are safe or recognize. Some people are using this trick to get unsuspecting people to sign onto an open hotspot they have setup and then they steal your files or break into you machine.

Those are a few things I can think of off the top of my head :)

You would normally enter 192.168.1.1 on your IE/RR url. Check your router documentation, the IP address could be different.

Regarding being at a hotspot, you just need to set the connection as public, this way you will be protected.
