Right now I'm currently renting an old Speedstream 4200 without wifi from Bell Sympatico and last week I received a new Thomson Gateway TG585 as a gift (modem with wifi). Tonight, I decided to try to install this new modem on my own and of course I didn't succeed (if I were only that lucky lol).

It's asking me a whole bunch of questions like: Select the service of DSL Account and then I have to choose from Selectable Ethernet WAN, Bridge, IP Routed, Routed PPP. I'll admit that I have no clue as to which one I should choose but I played around with all of them and got nada. This is where you guys will hopefully come in. What do I do??? Help me plssssssssss.... :)

    Thanks.

Check your ISP's website for setup instructions for that specific modem.

If not then we can do it the hard way.

Who is your ISP, and do you know the details of the sort of service you've subscribed for, e.g., does it have a particular plan name, like "Blazing Fast Internet" or "Barely Broadband" (I'm making those up, of course :D), or the specific type of DSL service you get?

Also, I assume that this modem/router is the one you received, correct?

I'm with Bell Sympatico...my internet service is High Speed DSL (no funny name that I know of lol)...I've been on the same plan for the past 5 yrs. I printed the setup manual from their website and plan on trying with that...but if there is any advice you could give it would be appreciated. Ohh and yes that is the modem I received. Thanks.

Ok. I did a quick bit of poking around on the Bell Sympatico website, and it looks like the service type is what's called "PPPoE" or Point-to- Point- Protocol-over- Ethernet (there's a wikipedia article on PPPoE if you're really curious). I gathered this from a trouble-shooting page for another modem used by Bell Sympatico, the 2Wire 2701; however, that doesn't necessarily mean that you get the same sort of service, since your old modem was the Speedstream 4200. However, that's a good place to start, so I would configure your new modem for PPPoE and see if it takes.

Another good source of information (actually, a better source) would be the admin webpage for your old Speedstream 4200 - I would log onto it, copy down all of the information there relating to the modem's setup, and then see if you can match that info to the questions being asked by your new modem's setup.
