    I wonder of Google is using a similar algorithm.

    To compress your jpeg photo`s from your digital camera, I use to use an app calles JpegMini(i have had it for years) it can compress up to 5x smaller and i could not see any difference, you can try a demo version in the link below.

    Took 24 seconds to encode a 512x512 high quality photo on a 6700HQ (the encoder is single-threaded) at default quality. They are probably not focusing on speed yet.
