I am going to be signing up for comcast and self installing. I need a modem and a wireless router but I don't have ton to spend. I am wondering which component must be taken special attention to the most: router or modem? which is worth forking over extra cash for?

i would appreciate specific names/models please!

    thanks

Lease the modem through Comcast. It cost $3 or $4 per month. The reason I suggest suggest this is because I have went through five modems during my two years with Comcast. Since it's leased, I can just go down to the Comcast office and get a new one for free.

Also, the Comcast reps won't give you much phone support service unless you got your modem through them.

You can shop for a router here:

The prices are lower than you will find at Radioshack or Best Buy for the same product. Any of them will do. I woudln't suggest spending more than $40 for a router unless you need wireless N, in which case $60 would be my max.

I agree with Greg, you are better with their modem/router because their already lousy customer service but at least they will talk to you, plus if it doesn't work, they will replace it, and if you don't like them anymore, then you can change to Verizon for real Internet experience, you just spent $36 for their equipment rental :D
